Institut Les Cinc Sénies is an estate secondary school located in Mataró, the capital of Maresme, in Catalonia. There are fourteen class groups which are distributed in four levels of compulsory secondary education (ESO). In autumn of 2021 Les Cinc Sénies will also offer high school education.
Institut Les Cinc Sénies was created in 2017 to respond to an increased demand for secondary education in the city of Mataró, based on the objective of ensuring a quality education for all its students. The educational community of Les Cinc Sénies is committed to apply emerging and innovative methodologies to create a genuine place that empowers the students by helping them recognize their strengths and facilitates the development of skills in their lifelong learning process. And being genuine means: to be creative, critical and enterprising; in short, to be competent in a world that is constantly changing and requires a lot of flexibility and an ability to adapt to new circumstances.
We arrange the students’ time schedule by grouping the subjects into three time zones: Core and Foundation, Projects and Management and initiative. To ensure a global and multilevel approach to learning and teaching we also offer a variety of inter-level elective subjects.
The educational community of Les Cinc Sénies takes part in numerous projects and initiatives such as STEAM.cat and the Retotech Project. Last year a group of our students, EcoLliures team, participated and won the ASOC Open Cohesion Project. For several years we participated in the Networks of basic skills programme (XCB). Our teachers are motivated to participate in different training programmes such as: Innovation Programme of Internship Teachers’ Training (MUFPS) and Transformation Laboratory.
We encourage autonomy as well as collaborative task-based work thanks to the open conception of space exploitation by creating versatile spaces and taking into account our diversity students at all times. CLIL methodology is also applied to teaching history and world geography in English and French. By encouraging initiatives such as the creation of a cooperative called Cooperatina LCS, the creation of a digital students’ review Les Cinc Sénies Report, the organisation of open houses for future students, training the female football team Futsal LCS, all managed by our students, we encourage them to develop their personal, social and enterprising skills.
We believe that student participation in extracurricular projects and initiatives such as: Install Party at Tecnocampus Mataró, Ah, l’art? Ah, l’art! museum project, Musicaacció, Versembrant rap, production and visual arts workshops, Marine Biodiversity project, helps students to develop their interests and become conscious and responsible citizens.
To get in touch with other schools in Catalonia that share similar interests and initiatives in order to form an internal cooperation network.
To know more about different experiences of other, also foreign, educational centres.
To learn from others, specially space versatility and organisation in order to break the chair-table-blackboard conventionality.
To delve into STEAM approaches to teaching and learning.
In LCS we work by uniting subjects in three distinct time slots. In Core and Foundation (FON) we work in depth on scientific and linguistic notions. In Projects (PROJ) a global and cross-curricular approach is applied to promote group and cooperative work among students. Management and Initiative (GEiN) represents a holistic approach to subjects where emphasis is placed on social and emotional learning (SEL).
Inclusion
To make inclusion a reality we apply diverse measures such as co-teaching and multi-level tasks and activities.
We are constantly developing and enhancing our performance and we are always open to receive training and offer our experience.
