Learning Expeditions - Support and challenge our students to do beautiful work that matters
Each term, students at XP Gateshead study cross-curricular learning expeditions which address big questions such as "How can we continue to make progress in public health?" or "What does it mean to be human?".
Working alongside experts, carrying out purposeful fieldwork and doing authentic and worthy work are integral parts of every learning expedition. Our students work as artists, geologists, writers, scientists, engineers, designers... to complete projects within each learning expedition, with public facing products that make a difference to our local community. With the support and challenge of experts like you, our students have:
Published illustrated local history books on our cultural heritage - on sale at Seven Stories, the national centre for children's literature.
Composed folk music to honour the stories of members of the mining community.
Authored creative writing about unheard voices of The Great War and produced these as a radio broadcast, which went live on local station Memory Lane Radio on Armistace Day.
Used Bootstrap Cook by Jack Munroe to design a week's worth of recipes to feed families in need, and then donated food boxes with all ingredients and recipes to a local charity.
Written and delivered speeches on what it means to be human.
Created an art installation to promote organ donation, housed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Published a website to promote conservation of local species, helping scientists to collect data on important keystone species.
Performed Macbeth to a live audience at Caedmon Hall.
Produced a film which honours the stories of migrants to and from the UK.
Designed and manufactured a cast sculpture inspired by brutalism which is curated at the Farrell Centre for Architecture.

We are open to contact from organisations that could enrich our students' study of the curriculum through working alongside experts.
Likewise, we are on the lookout for organisations that can provide authentic briefs for our students to experience working as a scientists, mathematician, artist etc.

Throughout their time at XP Gateshead, students go through carefully planned experiences that help to develop and reveal character, teaching our children that 'There is more in them than they know'.
Students carry out Student-Led Conferences twice per year where they reflect on their progress using supporting evidence from their portfolio.
Each term students carry our a Presentation of Learning on their latest Learning Expedition where they discuss their learning and their views on the guiding question with a large audience of families and wider members of the community.
In Year 9 students carry out Passage Presentations where they make a case for their readiness for GCSEs. This is done to a panel of staff, families and members of the wider community.
If you are interested in attending a Presentation of Learning to find out more about our students' work, or acting as a panellist for Passage Presentations, please contact office@xpgateshead.org
