Year 9

Last updated: 15th November 2021

Year 9 is all about starting to focus your career plans and ambitions and making decisions about the GCSE subjects you want to study.

Your Experience passport

is an important part of this process. Not only will you have chance to take part in lots of different activities and experiences, you also start to develop employability skills that employers want and collate evidence ready for writing your cv and applying for apprenticeships and college places in year 11.

Personal Guidance

Every student in year 9 will have the chance to talk about their career ideas with Mrs Gibbins, our qualified, impartial adviser. You start by thinking about likes and dislikes, strengths and areas for improvement and you will then have the chance to think about careers this could lead to and find out routes to achieve them.

Later in the year, you will talk to your subject teachers about your progress in their subject and find out what their course offers you, if you continue to study it in years 10 and 11.

WoW days

On a WoW day you have chance to talk to people doing real jobs and find out all about them. What skills and qualifications do they need? How can they get promotions and progress? and how much could you earn if you did something similar.

POD

Our Post 16 option day (or POD) is a chance for you to find out what's on offer in our local area. What colleges are there and where are they? What can you study? Do you have to go to college? What is an apprenticeship? You will have chance to get answers to these questions and many others.

Part-time work is a great way to build your cv, gain valuable experience and earn some money.

There are strict rules about the hours you can work and the types of work youcan do. These rules exist to protect you and stop employers asking them to do too much. Darlington Borough Council is responsible for enforcing the Child Employment laws within our area. The employer of any school-age child is required to apply for a work permit before the child starts work. Click here for the most recent rules.

Please note that a school reference is required as part of the permit application process and permits will only be issued to students with a good attendance record.
