Information for parents

2021-22

Last updated: 6th September 2021

We aim to provide the highest quality careers education, independent advice and guidance possible to raise the aspirations of our students and ensure they reach their full potential.

We help students to

  • find out about careers and the world of work

  • develop employability skills

  • take responsibility for planning their own career pathway

This is delivered in a variety of ways including

  • PSHCE lessons and work done in Visions and Values time

  • assemblies

  • visits to and from employers, colleges and universities

  • visiting speakers

  • careers interviews

  • activities delivered within curriculum areas.

  • visits to workplaces

  • our annual Careers Evening

  • events held in school eg. Army days, WOW days, Post 16 Options events

This year our Careers evening is planned for Wednesday 13th October from 6-8pm in the Main Hall. This is an opportunity for students and their parents/carers to talk to staff at local colleges and apprenticeship providers and start to make their plans.

Following this most pupils in year 11 will then visit colleges of interest at one of their Open Events and see for themselves what is on offer.

Dates of local events are added to our careers calendar regularly.

Part-time work is a great way to build your cv, gain valuable experience and earn some money.

There are strict rules about the hours young people can work and the types of work they can do. These rules exist to protect them and stop employers asking them to do too much. Darlington Borough Council is responsible for enforcing the Child Employment laws within our area. The employer of any school-age child is required to apply for a work permit before the child starts work. Click here for the most recent rules.

Please note that a school reference is required as part of the permit application process and permits will only be issued to students with a good attendance record.

Further information can be obtained from Darlington Borough Council tel: 01325 406161

Our Careers Lead, Cath Gibbins, is available throughout the year to support pupils in all year groups. All students will have an individual guidance meeting in year 10 or 11 and all pupils in year 9 will be supported in making informed choices about their GCSE options.

She can be contacted through the school reception on 01325 351377 or by email: cathryn.gibbins@consilium-at.com
