Year 11

Last updated: 6th June 2022

In year 11

you will make decisions about your future and make plans so you can achieve your ambitions. You will hear from lots of local colleges before making your final decision of where to apply to.

Throught the year you will have lots of support; your subject teachers can help you decide if you would do well in their subject area, your tutor can provide more general support, like helping with applications, your PSHCE teacher will help you with your CV and Mrs Gibbins will support you throughout the year, including on Results day when you have to make your final decision.

Your Experience passport

is an important part of this process. Not only will you have chance to take part in lots of different activities and experiences, you also start to develop employability skills that employers want and collate evidence ready for writing your cv and applying for apprenticeships and college places later this year.

Personal Guidance

You should use your action plan form your Guidance Interview to help you to research your career options. If you are strugging or need extra help go and see Mrs Gibbins in the Opportunities Zone at the back of the Hall. she can help with things like

  • checking CVs

  • talking through different course options

  • National Apprenticeship Service registrations

  • college applications

and just about any other help you will need to settle into your new college. But you need to ask for help when you need it.

Vision and Values sessions

Throughout the year you will have a variety of presentations/assemblies from different colleges and other providers including

  • QE SIxth Form College

  • Darlington College

  • Middlesbrough College and MC6 Sixth Form

  • Bishop Auckland College

  • South Durham UTC

This is an easy way what is on offer in lots of places without having to go to the college yourself. Then, if you like what you hear, you can go and have a look for yourself- most colleges and providers have a variety of Open events throughout the year. Dates will be added to our Careers Calendar as we get them.

Careers evening

Our annual Careers Evening is held in the first half term of your year 11. This is another opportunity for you to talk to colleges and apprrenticeship providers and find out what they can offer you.

It's held in the Main Hall from 6-8pm so you can come with your parents and they can find out more about your plans as well.

Part-time work is a great way to build your cv, gain valuable experience and earn some money.

There are strict rules about the hours you can work and the types of work youcan do. These rules exist to protect you and stop employers asking them to do too much. Darlington Borough Council is responsible for enforcing the Child Employment laws within our area. The employer of any school-age child is required to apply for a work permit before the child starts work. Click here for the most recent rules.

Please note that a school reference is required as part of the permit application process and permits will only be issued to students with a good attendance record.

Further information can be obtained from Darlington Borough Council tel: 01325 406161
