Year 10

Last updated: 6th June 2022

In year 10

you will find out more about your options for when you leave school and start to plan what you would like to do.

Your Experience passport

is an important part of this process. Not only will you have chance to take part in lots of different activities and experiences, you also start to develop employability skills that employers want and collate evidence ready for writing your cv and applying for apprenticeships and college places in year 11.

Personal Guidance

Towards the end of year 10/ beginning of year 11 every student will have the chance to talk about their career ideas with Mrs Gibbins, our qualified, impartial adviser. This is a chance to find out more about your career ideas and start to plan the route you will take to achieve your ambitions.

You will then use your action plan to do your own research, before you make your decisions and apply in year 11.

WoW days

On a WoW day you have chance to talk to people doing real jobs and find out all about them. What skills and qualifications do they need? How can they get promotions and progress? and how much could you earn if you did something similar.

POD (Post 16 Options Day)

Our Post 16 option day (or POD) is a chance for you to find out what's on offer in our local area. What colleges are there and where are they? What can you study? Do you have to go to college? What is an apprenticeship? You will have chance to get answers to these questions and many others.

College visits

Everyone in year 10 visits a variety of colleges. It's a good idea to have a look at different places, even if you think you already know where you are going. How do you know it's not for you if you have never looked?

The subjects offered by each college are different from Hairdressing, Bricklaying to Law and Psychology. These trips are a good opportunity to find out about subjects you may never have tried before.

Our annual Careers evening

takes place on 13th October this year.

This is you chance to talk to a variety of colleges and apprenticeship providers from our local area and start to plan what is right for you.

This event is open to all students in years 10 and 11 and their parents/carers.

Not sure where to start looking?

Start by looking at our post 16 options page. Everything you need to get started researching your options is there for you.

Part-time work is a great way to build your cv, gain valuable experience and earn some money.

There are strict rules about the hours you can work and the types of work youcan do. These rules exist to protect you and stop employers asking them to do too much. Darlington Borough Council is responsible for enforcing the Child Employment laws within our area. The employer of any school-age child is required to apply for a work permit before the child starts work. Click here for the most recent rules.

Please note that a school reference is required as part of the permit application process and permits will only be issued to students with a good attendance record.

Further information can be obtained from Darlington Borough Council tel: 01325 406161
