Intro to Journalism (J1)
About Journalism 1
Currently, you must take Journalism 1 and 2 as a prerequisite for Broadcast Journalism. Offered to sophomores through seniors, Journalism 1 is an intro to media course that surveys all the types of journalist articles. These students maintain our Twitter account by tweeting daily on their personal school accounts.
In Journalism 1 we learn about the struggles of reporting in other countries. The Declaration is raising awareness about Austin Tice, a freelance reporter being held captive in Syria since 2012. We are making it our mission to help bring him home. We ask that once a week you Tweet #FreeAustinTice so that he is not forgotten.

Grading
Students will be graded every 2 weeks on their tweets. Each week they should have 5 tweets for a total of 10 in two weeks. Tweets should be school related and points will be deducted if tweets are simply retweets or are not addressing school / town events.
Articles will be graded as a major assessment. Students will have a week to research the topic, interview at least 2 reliable people, take a photo, compose their article and get the article edited by 2 team members. Points will not be deducted for late articles as long as the student makes the me aware of the obstacles they are facing in meeting the deadline.
Because some articles are time sensitive, if articles are not finished in a timely fashion, they may not be published. If articles do not meet the requirements, I reserve the right to not publish the article, however, I will explain what needs to be fixed in order for it to be published.
Each student will select a topic for their article. The topic is reserved only when it is entered on the newspaper log
All articles must go through rounds of editing. J1 students must get their article edited by a J1 student and a J2 or J3. Students will be graded on peer editing of other's articles.
ALL videos, pictures, music, scripts, characters and ideas are expected to be that of the student. Copyright infringement will nit be tolerated and will result in a zero on the assignment. All music and pictures must be labeled for reuse.
