UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest info
Here is the link to the UIL Prescribed Music List (PML). These are the songs you are allowed to play at Solo and Ensemble. If your song is NOT on this list, you CANNOT play it for contest.
If your solo is accompanied, you must play with the piano accompanist (most solos have a piano part and you will have to pay the accompanist to use them). If it says unaccompanied on the PML, those are the only songs that you do not have to use a piano player with.
Make sure you get the right grade level (grade 1 (class 1)=hardest, grade 2 (class 2)=challenging, grade 3 (class 3)=freshman only). Remember you cannot play a piece you have already taken to contest before. (if you started to learn one, but never competed or registered on it, you may play it again.)
Ensembles do not have to be memorized. Solos need to be memorized if you are intending to go to state.
You or the school MUST own an original book of the music to your solo and ensemble for you to be able to play it. If you choose one that we don't have the original for, you MUST purchase that book and it must arrive to you by contest, as the judge will look on that part to score you.
**Remember you must number your measures on the original copy of the music (your part, not the piano part) for the judge to read.
To go to State Solo Contest you must-
play a class 1 solo by MEMORY and earn a First Division Rating from the judge.
To go to State Ensemble Contest you must-
play a class 1 ensemble with the correct instruments listed in the PML and earn a First Division Rating from the judge.
You must choose your solo and tell us which one it is by Thanksgiving Break. Some of you might want to think ahead on this and communicate with your lesson teacher.
Ideas to help you choose a solo- ask the upperclassmen in your section what they played and liked, ask your lesson teacher, ask Ms. Ballaro (percussion, ask Mr. Duke). Go to the UIL PML and start listening to find one you like and order it. CHECK THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST NOTES AND RHYTHMS AND MAKE SURE YOU CAN PLAY THEM BEFORE YOU CHOOSE ONE.
Students must be eligible to compete at this contest for a solo or ensemble. Check the eligibility calendar to see which grading periods affect Solo and Ensemble participation based on the day of the contest.
