The Brewer HS Fightin’ Bear Band is the largest single student organization at Brewer High School, comprised of about 200 students. All students in the high school band participate in marching band, which rehearses outside of school. Three Concert Bands, a Jazz Band, and Color Guard class meet during the school day. Each band is team-taught, with multiple directors assisting throughout each rehearsal. Private lessons are available for any student during his/her band class or before or after school for a fee. In addition to band classes, there are multiple opportunities for participation in other individual and ensemble performances including All-Region/All-State, Solo & Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Winter guard.
The Marching Band is comprised of all students in the band program, 9th through 12th grades. The Marching Band supports the football team at every football game and performs the competition show at half-time. Students will participate in local marching festivals and UIL Marching Contests. Membership in the Marching Band is required for all BHS band members.
Wind Ensemble is the top performing concert ensemble in the band program and is open to students in all four grades. To be a member, a student must demonstrate the highest level of musical maturity, technical proficiency, and commitment to rehearsal and practice time. A student must seriously pursue individual goals on their instrument as well as work diligently toward ensemble goals. Auditioning for All-Region Band and playing a solo at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest is required. Private lessons are strongly encouraged.
Symphonic Band is considered the second performing concert ensemble and is also comprised of students in all four grades. To be a member of this group, a student must demonstrate a high level of musical maturity, technical proficiency, and commitment to rehearsal and practice time. Auditioning for All-Region Band and playing a solo at UIL Solo and Ensemble Competition is required. Private lessons are strongly encouraged.
Concert Band is the third performing concert ensemble and is comprised of students in all four grades. To be a member of this group, a student must demonstrate musical maturity, technical proficiency, and commitment to rehearsal and practice time. Preparing portions of the All-Region Band audition music and a solo is required. Private lessons and participation in UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest are strongly encouraged.
Jazz Band Membership is by audition during the previous spring term. The Jazz Band performs at 1 or more concerts, 1 or more Jazz Festivals, and many community performances during the year. Alternates will be designated for the competition band in case of eligibility or attendance problems.
The Brewer High School Color Guard is the visual representation of the music on the field. The Guard consists of students from all four high school grade levels by audition only. Guard trains athletes to perfect their equipment skills, dance movement, and marching skills to perform as artists on the field during marching season and on the floor during indoor Winter Guard season. Winter Guard is during the second semester of the year. Students will learn a new show and compete all over the Metroplex in the NTCA circuit.
