Throughout history, countless stories and anecdotes tell us how individuals seek to fulfill their American Dream, battle against the pressures of society, and search for identity (their own or that of their culture). In this semester-long course, we will use a variety of texts drawn from the canon of American Literature, past and present, to explore these themes. Since the English language contains exceptions to nearly every rule, the selection of literature for this course follows suit: in addition to texts by American writers, we will look at Shakespeare’s Macbeth and how it connects to the themes we’re studying. Expect to complete reading and writing assignments, both analytical and creative in nature. Expect large and small-group discussions, projects, and research tasks.
