Description
This course is designed to cultivate the next generation of effective educators in Utah. Students will explore various educational careers and develop crucial employable skills. They will learn to create basic lesson plans and address the academic needs of individual students. The course offers an in-depth investigation into influential theorists who have shaped student learning and child development. Through hands-on projects, students will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world classroom scenarios and gain experience in the professional responsibilities of educators.
Students will conduct interviews with educational professionals, analyze educational theories, develop and present lesson plans, and evaluate educational legislation's impact on classroom accommodations.
Students are encouraged to join West Field’s Chapter of Educators Rising, an organization that promotes and competes in the skills essential to teaching.

Get hands-on experience of how an educator, coach, counselor or trainer uses classroom management strategies to increase engagement and effectiveness with students in the classroom, on the field or other training capacity. What is the role of an educator in classroom management? Are there tips & tricks that will help in the training and teaching setting? Find these answers and more as you learn about instructional strategies and lesson planning used in a classroom by seasoned professionals. Actual time will be spent developing mini lessons and creating learner activities and assessments for students in classrooms in schools or the Little Longhorn's Preschool or other settings as available.

This course introduces students to the teaching profession, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Students will explore the roles and responsibilities of educators, develop their own teaching philosophy, and gain an understanding of effective classroom practices. Key topics include diversity in education, classroom management, instructional design, and adherence to the Utah Effective Teaching Standards (UETS). This course does require WSU admission, a $30 fee, if not already admitted to Weber State University.
Through engaging assignments and community-based learning, students will:
Develop lesson plans using state-approved standards and the High-Quality Instructional Cycle (HQI).
Examine the impact of multiculturalism, diversity, and socioeconomic factors on student learning.
Participate in classroom observations or service-learning projects to connect educational theory to real-world practice.
Reflect on their experiences to better understand their potential role in the education system.
This course prepares students for future studies in education or related careers while emphasizing professionalism, ethical standards, and inclusivity. For students in concurrent enrollment, additional opportunities to earn college credit and complete community engagement hours are provided.
Students must provide personal transportation to practicum sites.
