Understanding CTE Career Pathway Programs
A CTE program is a multi-semester instructional program delivered by a CTE center that provides specific, career education in one of a number of career pathways aligned with current and future employment needs.
Program competencies are developed through a collaboration between various stakeholders, including educators and industry partners, and reflect what a student should know to be prepared for the full range of opportunities within that career field.
CTE programs can provide students with a chance to earn college credits and industry training hours and credentials, as well as the opportunity to participate in meaningful work-based learning experiences such as internships and externships.
Postsecondary Prepared – Some CTE programs offer students opportunities to earn college credits and industry training hours, and students engage in organized postsecondary planning
Professionally Skilled – Students can earn internationally-recognized industry certifications and credentials
Workplace Ready – Students develop the valued skills employers seek out by participating in job shadows and internships, meeting accomplished professionals and competing in state and national skills competitions
Focused – Most students attend CTE classes five days a week for 90 minutes each day over a two-year period. They also receive college and career guidance – including college and industry site tours
Engaged – Students work hand-in-hand with, befriend and learn from fellow students who share similar career interests and ambitions
