What’s normal and what’s possible for a kindergarten are two different questions. It is normal (common but certainly not desired) for a 5-year-old able to be unable to match pitch and clap/pat a steady beat. Talent and environment (nature and nurture) will be the main factors that determine a student’s performance in music. However, studies show that music aptitude is not set until age 9. This means that a student with limited talent could grow into a capable musician with the proper instruction and exposure to various musical experiences.
