Over the next two years we will be covering the 4 mandatory units as well as the additional ones (as per the above). These units cover the current teaching, learning and assessment theory in depth and every trainee will need to put these principles into practice - some things will work, some won't so it's important to keep trying, experimenting, challenging oneself and reflecting - this is often called 'a reflective journey' in teacher development.
That is why everyone needs to have a minimum of 40 teaching hours in Year 1 (and a minimum 60 teaching hours in Year 2), of course they can teach more as sometimes what works well with one group of learners doesn't work as well with another cohort. Teaching practice means having a group of students that the trainee teacher sees on a weekly basis and their responsibilities include:
planning input sessions
delivering input sessions
catering to students' individual needs
designing/adapting learning resources
differentiating teaching strategies/resources to meet individual needs
performing a tutoring role (this goes beyond passing knowledge and taps into the softer skills)
managing learner behaviour
planning and conducting assessments, for instance, in an exam based class like GCSE the teacher is responsible for students' outcomes - preparing them for the exams and passing;
regardless of subject specialism there is usually some sort of end product that students are working towards over the course so every lesson should be a stepping stone helping them prepare for this
courses can have varied length - be year long or shorter (e.g. 10 week)
each programme of study will need to have a scheme of work that the teacher follows
You will need a work based mentor (you can have more!) and will be observed 4 times each year delivering a 60 minute session each time, and will need to submit a lesson plan and scheme of work in advance (I will share templates), then reflect in the observation report. I will be observing her twice and mentor(s) twice as well. Other assessments will include assignments, presentations, group work, reflective log, .
