Learn and develop the essential skills for university survival. From wiring a plug to how to scramble an egg, this course has got you covered! 

Based in the fantastic kitchens and facilities at the HKCA, you will learn how to cook cuisine from around the world whilst also developing essential life skills for when you leave home and are living in shared accommodation at university. 

In the spirit of independence, students will make their own way to and from the venue each day.

This culturally immersive program offers a unique opportunity for students to develop essential skills and a compassionate mindset, empowering them to address social issues and business challenges faced by the African community in Hong Kong. By engaging in African cultural activities and utilizing design thinking tools, students will gain a deep understanding and appreciation for the communities they aim to serve. Inspired by the rich tradition of knowledge sharing within African societies, where education is deeply rooted in the community, this program fosters a spirit of learning and collaboration. Through exciting community-based projects and the application of design thinking, students will embark on an engaging journey. Alongside immersive cultural activities like African hair workshops and cooking workshops, students will work in teams to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for small African businesses in Hong Kong. This program provides students with a transformative experience, enabling them to make a tangible impact while gaining invaluable skills and insights.

Participating in Crossroads is a fantastic opportunity for students to get authentic, hands on service experience. Students will help with the operational running of the centre as well as taking part in simulations that will help students better understand global issues.  As the Chinese proverb puts it: ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.’ 

Please note that Crossroads is closed on Mondays so this trip will run Tuesday-Friday. If there is availability, students can opt to join either Hiking HK, Lantau Trails or the HK Fitness trip on Monday and pay on a pro rata basis. Please contact jessica.gilbert@wis.edu.hk if you wish to do this.

Students will develop their golf technique, resilience and focus on the beautiful Kau Sai Chau golf course in Sai Kung. They will experience the driving range and different courses, guided by professional golf coaches. Students will travel to and from Sai Kung on a bus from school.

Ever wondered what the Wilson or Hong Kong trails are? Ever seen the view of Hong Kong from one of its highest peaks? Ever walked the Dragon’s Back? Find out more about your own backyard and how green it really is.

Get outdoors and experience the real gems of Hong Kong. Each day explore a different hike along the many trails this wonderful land has to offer. The hikes will begin gently and become progressively more challenging as you get accustomed to the walks. We will be meeting at different starting points each day, ready to hit the trails.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Packed lunches are needed as well as a charged up Octopus Card to use the public transport as students need to travel independently to and from hike meeting and finishing locations. Please note that the timings for each day will vary depending on the hike. A detailed itinerary will be shared with you nearer the time.

The Hong Kong Award for Young People program includes a series of outdoor adventure activities for students. Participants will first complete a 2 day hike and camping trip from Monday to Tuesday to practice their outdoor skills. They will then attend an in-school training day on Wednesday focused on teamwork, communication and planning. Next, students will embark on another 2 day hike and camp from Thursday to Friday to put their new skills into practice working together as a team in the wilderness. The program aims to develop students' self-reliance, leadership abilities, social skills and environmental awareness through hands-on expedition experience. 

Important information: To participate in HKAYP, you must also commit to HKAYP CAS in term 1 and term 2. Students in Year 10 and above are eligible for the Bronze Award and students in Year 12 and above are eligible for the Silver Award.

Hong Kong Ultimate Fitness is back! Enjoy completing a range of adventurous fitness challenges and activities all around the territory. From exploring HK's running trails, working with elite fitness trainers and yoga instructors in their private, well equipped facilities and exploring new parts of Hong Kong, this trip has it all. 

Please note that the meeting point will vary each day and your child will need to independently take public transport. 

Students will join a thriving jewellery community for a week and learn about jewellery making from a beginner level, or expand their skills if they have prior experience. Students will develop techniques used by professionals and discover their unique creativity. Students will create a piece of silver jewellery and a collection of copper jewellery.

Explore some of the famous and off-the-beaten-track trails of stunning Lantau. Connect with nature, enjoy the beautiful views and have fun connecting with new and old friends. 

The start and end time will vary each day depending on the hike. Students will need to travel independently to the different start and end points using public transport.

Have you ever wondered if you would be interested in a Martial Art? Here is the perfect opportunity to try out a few. Work on some boxing skills to start your week off, arms feeling heavy, that's ok as we move onto Taekwondo and use our legs. Ever tried Muay Thai? Now's your chance as we move onto day 3. Fishing the week off with some Judo and BJJ. Each day you have a chance to finish off with a light sparring session to test out the skills learned on each day.

Discover the fun and exhilaration of mountain biking over 5 days on Lantau, one of Hong Kong’s most beautiful Islands. This course will use the bike park and the trails. Each day after a safety briefing, you will experience a variety of terrains and environments gaining the skills to ride some of the best mountain bike trails available locally. Students should be confident on a bike to participate in this activity. If you can already ride a bike at home, we welcome you to learn more advanced skills in a safe and fun environment. The new Bike Park offers everything from fun flowy single track to fast downhill blasts. 

Note: due to hygiene reasons it is preferred that students provide their own bike helmet. Please contact the trip leader if this is an issue.

Led by Georgina from Image Box Photography, the week will consist of understanding where influences come from, how ideas form and how photographers get to the final image. The students will start to create their own stories and bodies of work through the lens, eventually working toward a final piece to display and discuss. You will see the students research and experiment with photography, creativity and find  influences, unfolding through a sketch book of ideas.

The course will have support booklets to refer to throughout and at later dates when the student wants to strengthen their new found skill.

Technical knowledge of the cameras working will cover shutter speed, iso, aperture, light metering, lenses and how shape, colour, mood, story and relevance of subjects create images. The workshop will cover the main elements of photography needed to gain the knowledge of a photographers working world, from ideas and influences to technical knowledge, to discussions of each other’s work, through to framing their own piece and presenting it at an exhibition.

During this activity, students will be based at the Sunroom Studio in Peng Chau and learn how to use the wheel. You will learn how to work with clay and then start to mould  your creations. Every day you will take the ferry to beautiful Peng Chau and work alongside others in a beautiful rural setting. At the end of the week you will fire your creations to be able to keep them forever. Please note, this course runs from 9-3pm each day apart from Friday which finishes at 1.30pm.

Get an alternative perspective on school life by going from student to teacher! This is an opportunity to participate in direct service by supporting student learning in the classroom. You will work with an experienced class teacher in either Kennedy School, Bradbury School or Quarry Bay School to support students. This is suitable for students who are flexible, reflective and willing to take instructions to ensure the best learning experience possible for the children. You will need a high level of maturity to participate in this experience.  Please note that this is a week long service commitment and you must be committed to attending for the full 5 days.

Please note that no WIS teacher will be on-site during this activity and you will report to the Vice Principal in charge at the primary school.

Suitable for Years 10-13, students will develop teamwork and leadership skills in a multi-phase adventure race across 5 days. Highlights of the trip include: navigating across different areas of Hong Kong including sea navigation; trekking through a hidden and technical gorge; water-based & high elements skills development; finish the week in multi-activity challenge around Clear Water Bay Peninsula in Sai Kung.

The goals of the trip are: team building and team participation; develop greater self-awareness, acceptance of group and personal responsibilities; appreciate nature and Hong Kong’s environmental concerns; face both physical and social challenges with an open mind; experiential learning in a safe and fun environment.

Please note that Monday-Wednesday are day trips and Thursday-Friday involves camping overnight in tents in Sai Kung Country Park. On Monday-Wednesday students will travel to and from the venues in Aberdeen, Sai Kung and Shek O by bus that will depart from and return to school.

Participate in direct service supporting the animal community of Hong Kong. Daily tasks will include: dog walking; laundry; cleaning the dogs' enclosure; general upkeep of the Centre. Please see the photos and video provided to understand more about the students' responsibilities during the week.

Due to the remote location of the Centre, students will travel to and from Sai Kung via bus from school each day. 

Complete your PADI open water diver course right here in Hong Kong guided by the professional team at Sai Kung Scuba. Hong Kong has 80+ coral species, 100+ reef fish species and 40+ dive sites to explore. You will learn how to dive safely and responsibly in a swimming pool before moving to the waters off Sai Kung. Students will need to complete the PADI online theory course.

Students in Year 11 and 13 can opt for an overseas trips, a local trip or 'Study & Serve' which is a new initiative where you can spend up to 4 days studying but must participate in at least a day of service. The cost is per day of service. The choice of service projects will be finalised when we know the student numbers but is likely to include:

• The Shed - making and packing food for homeless communities 

• Feeding Hong Kong - packing food in their warehouse

• The Centre for Refugees - 5 senses tour of Chungking Mansions, lunch cooked by refugee clients & refugee human library 

• Plastic Free Seas - talk and beach clean 

• Sai Kung Stray Friends 

• Impact HK - Kindness Walks 

• Crossroads 

Please click on each trip for further information. Students will select the experiences they would be interested in participating in and will be allocated one. Please note that providers have limited availability. They will be permitted to select two friends they would like to be with. Students will need to be flexible on what day they are allocated as this will depend on provider availability.  

Students will participate in a range of watersports activities including SUP, kayaking, surfing, dragon boating and wakeboarding. On the final day, students will also give back to the local community by participating in a beach clean. This is a fun opportunity to try new activities with friends.

Participating in Year 7 camp as a student camp leader is guaranteed to be a memorable experience as well as a valuable opportunity to develop leadership skills. 

Students will be allocated a group of students to work with and will support The Hutong and WIS staff in facilitating a fantastic experience for our Year 7 students. Being a Year 7 camp leader is a great responsibility as you will be a role model for our youngest students. 

This role is suited to energetic, organised and enthusiastic students who would like some leadership responsibility.
