Academy of Global Studies Mentoring Program
The purpose of the AGS mentoring program is two-fold. First, we aim to develop meaningful relationships between our youth and adult professionals in and around our community. Second, we aspire to foster leadership among our seniors by building relationships with adult professionals in our community and providing them the platform of leadership among a small group of 9th-12th grade scholars. Mentors meet with their mentoring groups twice a month in order to strengthen the ties with their mentees. The goal is for students to have the same adult mentors for the duration of their time with the Academy of Global Studies in the hope that this partnership provides students with life skills, internship / shadowing opportunities, and rich connections to the community around them.
On what do our mentors focus?
An effective mentor demonstrates the value of success he or she has encountered during his/her career path and uses these skills and successes to share knowledge and values with colleagues. A successful mentoring program shows mentors/coaches helping each other discover ways of adapting instruction to reach every participant on the team. Successful mentoring can help optimize everyone’s learning experiences by:
• Allowing and encouraging independent thought
• Opening communication within the team
• Fostering a reciprocal foundation of trust and respect
• Encouraging effective facilitation
• Promoting independent thought
• Developing roles within the team
