Activity 2.2: Sharing Spaces

Redesigned Learning Space

My redesigned learning space has multiple areas where students can work collaboratively or independently. The collaborative areas include two round tables with chairs, three groups of six desks put together, and an area with a couch and two chairs. Independent areas include two standing desks as well as two separate areas that include bean bags on an area rug. There is a teacher area in the back of the room that has a kidney table that provides an area for the teacher to collaborate with students or for students to work together.

My thought process for redesigning my learning space included multiple facets. I needed to first look at what would be financially possible to achieve over the next year. I am sure that if I found outside funding that my district would be willing to help a bit, but I knew that this transformation should be done in phases so that it is not overwhelming. I also need to provide students areas to be successful in group and independent areas and place independent areas in non-traffic zones of the classroom. The major consideration was if the seating would help my students by successful in meeting their learning goals. I need to provide enough traditional seating (in a chair with a table/desk) to be available to them if they need it. Lastly, I need to think about what the transition to this would look like. I like the idea A major thought was to keep my students comfortable. According to the article "Rethinking the Classroom", students who are in a comfortable classroom are more likely to be able to keep their mind focused. that was shared during our class presentation to choose a few students each day and allow them to choose a peer to join them in their flexible seating. I would choose students until everyone in the class got a turn and them I would start over again.

My design supports common-core standards based instruction in many ways. The design supports students in collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Students placed in groups will be able to collaborate with their peers. Students will have multiple areas in the room where they are able to collaborate such as the circle tables and the groupings of desks. Students will be able to effectively communicate with their peers as they are collaborating. They will be able to present and share their ideas. Critical thinking will be supported by students having the ability to work independently in a quieter area and address topics that we are covering in class. They also gave the ability to easily move to a group to share their ideas and receive feedback form their peers. Students will be encouraged to be creative as they will have access to supplies and their own computer where they can create their own ways to share their knowledge with the teacher either independently or collaboratively.

Other Ideas:

Initial Changes to Make My Design Do-able

  • Start de-cluttering all storage areas to create more room for student supplies to be readily accessible and to be able to move the student library to built in storage to eliminate the three book shelves that are currently behind my teacher computer desk. Plan for one day a week (Tuesday) to do a bit of de-cluterring.
  • Move computer cart away from door and to the front of the room by they promethean board.
  • Purchase a curtain to cove the area underneath the shelf that will store student supplies. I can store items below and the curtain will cover so that the students are not distracted.
  • move class library to eliminate shelves
  • Use cart that I already have to provide a standing desk.
  • possibly purchase folding camping chairs for students to use. They are easy to store.
