COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
PRACTICAL ENGLISH
This course is designed to assist those students in developing their reading and writing skills to prepare for required high school English courses. Students are placed in this course based on reading level and standardized benchmark scores.
Does not meet NCAA core requirements.
Grades 9-10 1 credit
ENGLISH I
This is a required course for ninth grade students which focuses on the writing process, including a review and refinement of sentence structure and grammar skills. Composition and research are integrated throughout the course. It also serves as an introduction to a variety of genres, including a Shakespearean play, short stories, novels, nonfiction and poetry.

HONORS ENGLISH I
Students in Honors English I will be required to complete the same components of English I with a more rigorous workload striving for a greater depth of knowledge, with independent study projects and more required reading.

ENGLISH II
This is a required course for all tenth grade students. Students work with the basic parts of a sentence, punctuation, and simple, compound, and complex sentences. They learn to develop paragraphs into longer pieces of writing, communicating in a logical and concise manner. They also do research in the library becoming familiar with resources there, which include using the computer lab. Students in English II read Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare becoming reacquainted with the Elizabethan Age, its language, customs, and the Globe theater. They will also read two other novels during the year.
Students will be required to take the Missouri End of Course exam in this class.

HONORS ENGLISH II

ENGLISH III
Required course for all juniors. This course provides students with an understanding of the philosophies, historical context, and literature that shape American culture. Students will read a cross section of American authors and genres. Students will respond analytically in writing to literature, and practice different forms of expository writing. Students will write a variety of MLA style essays. Students are also exposed to modifying the writing process to function under time constraints during essay exams.

HONORS ENGLISH III - AMERICAN LITERATURE BEFORE & AFTER 1865
An advanced class that gives college-bound juniors an intensive study of American literature and a foundation for effective college writing. Students read, discuss, and examine a broad sampling of literature. Students learn to compose accurate, grammatically correct essay test answers under time constraints and practice skills that are needed for success on the ACT. The course will provide the intellectual challenge and workload equivalent to a college-level freshman course and may earn students college credit. Writing assignments emphasize the critical analysis of literature and the effective and appropriate use of vocabulary and structures, personal expression and style at a level typical of college composition assignments.

ENGLISH IV
Students will read, respond, discuss, write and/or present on a variety of genres including poetry, drama, novels, short stories, and non-fiction works. Students will study the historical setting and culture of each piece of literature. Enriching vocabulary will be stressed as will the college application process and experience. Students will receive instruction in the process and specifications of writing research papers, which follow the MLA style of documentation. Workplace communication including job applications, resumes, cover letters and interviewing skills will also be points of emphasis.

HONORS ENGLISH IV - HONORS COMPOSITION 1 & 2
A college level composition course that focuses on techniques of rhetoric, critical thinking and effective written expression with an emphasis on the writing process, thesis, context, purpose and audience. Students will also analyze, respond to, and document a variety of complex written and visual texts. Students will be expected to collaborate effectively and respectfully with peers throughout the writing process.

CREATIVE WRITING
Students will study examples and practice a variety of creative writing genres like short fiction, drama, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Curriculum will emphasize style, forms, and techniques of the various genres. Students will be responsible for assessing professional level work, peer-editing, participating in student-led writing workshops, and refining their work. Outside reading and writing is required.

REAL WORLD WRITING AND COMMUNICATIONS
Students will focus on the various styles of business writing, other forms of communication, and expand awareness of English skills in daily life. Emphasis is placed on business etiquette, non-technical and technical writing skills, oral skills, and reading and listening skills. Students will explore the job search and application process as well as writing resumes, cover letters and perfecting interview skills.

ORAL COMMUNICATION
This is a general course in basic communication skills. The course will focus on helping students improve communication skills with peers, groups and professional situations by understanding the communication process and learning basic speaking techniques. The focus of this class leans more to communication than public speaking.
