NC.K.G.6
Compose larger shapes from simple shapes.
Compose larger shapes from simple shapes.
Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
In this standard, students form larger composite shapes from two or more simple shapes. Students should be able to describe the shapes they have composed using informal geometric terminology. Students also combine shapes to build pictures that should be described using informal geometric terminology. Students should informally explore geometric motions (slides, flips, and turns) to create pictures and solve shape puzzles.
The intent of this standard is to provide opportunities for students to create recognizable shapes that are listed in the kindergarten geometry standards. However, the use of shapes to solve shape puzzles or creatively make shape designs is also beneficial in kindergarten.
How can I combine simple shapes to create larger shapes or build pictures?
What happens when shapes are put together?
How many different shapes can be used make a __(square)___?
How can I describe the shapes or pictures using geometric terms?
How can shapes be used to build structures or designs?
How can shapes be used to create art?

Informally introduce:

Combine simple shapes to build new shapes and create pictures representing larger shapes.
Describe new shapes created based upon simple shape attributes and movement of shapes (flip, slide, turn). *Informal language is expected and acceptable.
Larger shapes are created by combining smaller shapes.
Pictures, larger shapes, structures, and designs can be built using smaller, simple shapes.
Shapes can be flipped, turned, or slid to create new shapes.
Step 2: Assessment
Step 3: Lesson Instructions
Exploration or Experience
Provide students with pattern blocks and ask them to create a shape. Have them share with a partner or group and explain how they built their shape.
