NC.K.g.1
Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of objects using positional terms.
Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of objects using positional terms.
Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
In this standard, students describe objects in the environment using the names of shapes mentioned in NC.K.G.2 and NC.K.G.3. Students are expected to describe the relative positions of objects using positional terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind and next to. Students are not expected to master the concept of “to the left” and “to the right” in kindergarten.
*Note: The following shape names will need to be introduced with this standard: squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres
Sample Essential Questions
What words can be used to describe the position and location of shapes?
How can shapes be named and described?
How can you describe where something is using position words?

Describe objects in the environment using the names of shapes (see NC.K.G.2 and NC.K.G.3).
Describe relative location of objects in the environment using positional terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind and next to.
Begin using "to the left" and "to the right" to describe relative location. (Mastery not expected in K.)
Relative location means an approximate position in reference to another object.
Objects in the environment can be described using shape names.
Position is where an object is located.
Names of shapes: squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres
