Apply the commutative and associative properties as strategies for solving addition problems.
Apply the commutative and associative properties as strategies for solving addition problems.
Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
This standard calls for students to apply both the commutative and associative properties of operations as they solve addition problems.
Students use mathematical tools and representations (e.g., cubes, counters, number balance, number line, 100 chart) to demonstrate the commutative and associative properties of operations in the context of solving a problem.
Students in first grade do not use the formal terms “commutative” and “associative”.
See Unpacking Document for examples.
What strategies can be used to solve addition problems?
What strategies can be used to add 3 addends?

commutative property
fact family
order
related facts
*Students in first grade are not expected to know the terms “commutative” and “associative." However, they may be introduced during instruction.
Use mathematical tools and representations to demonstrate the commutative and associative properties of operations.
Use the commutative and associative properties of operations to solve addition properties.
The order of the addends does not change the sum (commutative property).
The grouping of addends does not change the sum (associative property).

Stop at 1:46 for Commutative Property
Start at 3:32 for Associative Property
Turn and Talk
Post a math problem such as 3 + 2 + 1 = ____.
Ask students to discuss what numbers they added first to get their answers.
Ask students to try adding the numbers in a different order to see if it equals the same sum.
