The students were expected to choose a famous painting in art history and create a new version of the painting with found objects. They were encouraged to use items to show my time period. They were supposed to write a critique of the original painting to explain why they chose this piece of art over all others. The piece to the left was Re-Created by TJ (Timothy). Click here to see the other examples from the class.
The students were told to choose a product that already exists and create a new version of the product. They were encouraged to come up with a new name, logo, slogan and vessel design (can/box/bag/ package/etc.). Color or value is always encouraged to make the design pop. They could use the medium of my choice (drawing, painting, digital design). The design to the left was created by John. Click here to see the other students' designs.
Students were expected to research the image of the corona-virus to use in this art work. They were supposed to re-purpose the image into an everyday object using the medium of my choice (drawing, painting, digital design, found objects). The students were asked to fill the entire space and add details around the image to create a parody of the image. They were given a variety of examples. This parody was created by Timothy. Students had two options for this project.
OPTION 1: Students could create a marketing poster that advertises the need for home/online schooling.
OPTION 2: I will create a full color comic strip of something humorous that has happened while quarantined at home or while you were doing school work at home.
The students could use any medium of their choice (drawing, painting, digital design). The composition to the left was created by Brady . Click on this link to see the rest of the class' compositions.
The students were expected to create a color composition using the media of their choice (drawing, painting, 3D structure) to express their feelings regarding the COVID-19 situation in our world today. After the composition was complete, they were expected to write a brief summary describing the artwork. The composition to the left was created by Jimena. Click here to see the rest of the class' compositions.
Students were expected to find objects around their homes. They were required to find objects that were primary and secondary colors. Some students included objects that were tertiary colors. The colors were supposed to be placed in the order of a color wheel. The color wheel to the left was created by Jimena. To see the rest of the class' color wheels, click here.
Before Spring Break the students created small hand-built clay bowls. Then they chose the project they wanted to create. We had started the small groups, but only half of the class got their ceramics project created. We hope to get back to this when we return.
Before Spring Break we were working on Mixed Media while other students were doing work with clay (ceramics) in small groups. Here are our practice pieces. Click here to see the practice pieces.
Students were expected to pick one of the paper mache projects. They chose between a paper mache' bowl, an animal and a big head. They were to build the sculpture using a variety of recyclable materials. The students covered the pieces with layers of starched paper. When painting, the students were expected to mix colors and create a texture. If they chose to make the surface shiny, they could use mod podge. The piece to the left was created by Jimena and Natalie. Davonte is the model and winner of the big head race for 2nd period. Click here to see more.
Just a little fun with Op Art. The piece to the left was created by Ashton. See the rest of the class' work HERE.
Students were expected to create a composition of something they in which they have interest. They were to plan a composition that they could paint in a variety of colors. Six secondary and tertiary colors, 3 neutrals, 2 tints and 2 shades needed to be painted on the composition. The composition to the left was painted by Jimena. Click here to see the whole class' paintings.
Students were expected to create a composition with a winter theme. They could create a Christmas card or winter scene. Students transferred the design to a print plate and carved the design into the plate. An edition of three or more prints was required. They could print in the same color or various colors. The prints to the left were created by Ashton.

The students practices facial features and shading techniques first. When it came to the final project, students were asked to pick a portrait of a movie star, musician or athlete they like to use as a reference. They were told that this was just a reference. If it didn't turn out to look like the person, it was okay. To finish off the piece they were to use the inspiration of Kehinde Wiley. The portrait featured to the left was by Manuel.

When pretesting, I found that good majority of my students didn't have a great amount of experience with perspective. We started with one point perspective and found that they understood that pretty well. I took them to two point, making floating shapes. They enjoyed that. They found the drawing of barns and houses a little more challenging as we drew a few together. For the final project, I asked them to pick a building and try to draw it in two point perspective. They needed to add a good amount of detail which was demonstrated for them numerous times and they needed to add organic shapes/forms (bushes, trees, animals...). Here is the result of two weeks of diving deep into two point. The piece to the left was created by Davonte. To see practice pieces and the rest of the class' work, click here.

Students were expected to set up their own still life using objects around the classroom or find a still life photo to work from. My preference is always setting up one of their own so we collect garage sale items for our art room shelves. We practiced drawing forms, shading using a single light source and numerous shading effects such as hatching, cross-hatching, pointillism and others. The composition featured to the left was created by Kerrigan. Click on the link below to see the whole class' still life drawings. If it was turned in on time, it is featured.
