The students were expected to choose a famous painting in art history and create a new version of the painting with found objects. They were encouraged to use items to show my time period. They were supposed to write a critique of the original painting to explain why they chose this piece of art over all others. The piece to the left was Re-Created by this fantastic student. Click here to see the other examples from the class.
The students were told to choose a product that already exists and create a new version of the product. They were encouraged to come up with a new name, logo, slogan and vessel design (can/box/bag/ package/etc.). Color or value is always encouraged to make the design pop. They could use the medium of my choice (drawing, painting, digital design). The design to the left was created by Exlona. Click here to see the other students' designs.
Students were expected to research the image of the corona-virus to use in this art work. They were supposed to re-purpose the image into an everyday object using the medium of my choice (drawing, painting, digital design, found objects). The students were asked to fill the entire space and add details around the image to create a parody of the image. They were given a variety of examples. This parody was created by Ava. Students had two options for this project.
OPTION 1: Students could create a marketing poster that advertises the need for home/online schooling.
OPTION 2: I will create a full color comic strip of something humorous that has happened while quarantined at home or while you were doing school work at home.
The students could use any medium of their choice (drawing, painting, digital design). The composition to the left was created by Michaela. Click on this link to see the rest of the class' compositions.
The students were expected to create a color composition using the media of their choice (drawing, painting, 3D structure) to express their feelings regarding the COVID-19 situation in our world today. After the composition was complete, they were expected to write a brief summary describing the artwork. The composition to the left was created by Ava. Click here to see the rest of the class' compositions.
Students were expected to find objects around their homes. They were required to find objects that were primary and secondary colors. Some students included objects that were tertiary colors. The colors were supposed to be placed in the order of a color wheel. The color wheel to the left was created by Calob. To see the rest of the class' color wheels, click here.
Before Spring Break the students created small hand-built clay bowls. Then they chose the project they wanted to create. We had started the small groups, but only half of the class got their ceramics project created. The piece to the left is a bobble-head created by Timothy. We hope to get back to this when we return.
Before Spring Break we were working on Mixed Media while other students were doing work with clay (ceramics) in small groups. Here are our practice pieces. The practice piece to the left was created by Ananiah.
Students were expected to pick one of the paper mache projects. They chose between a paper mache' bowl, an animal and a big head. They were to build the sculpture using a variety of recyclable materials. The students covered the pieces with layers of starched paper. When painting, the students were expected to mix colors and create a texture. If they chose to make the surface shiny, they could use mod podge. The piece to the left was created by Julia. To see some of the other pieces, click here.
Students were expected to create a design. They transferred the design four times on a square paper. In each quadrant, the students were supposed to paint a different color scheme. First, they could paint a quadrant using any colors they personally liked. The other three quadrants were supposed to be a monochromatic color scheme, a warm or cool color scheme and a complementary color scheme. The painting to the left was created by Exlona. The rest of the class' work can be viewed by clicking HERE.
Students were expected to use two random words to create an interesting composition. The creation to the left was created by Joseph. To see the rest of the class' pieces, click HERE.
We started the unit by creating monoprints with shaving cream and paint. It's a fun activity that all the kids enjoy. It reminds the students each year the basics of printmaking. With the final piece, the students were supposed to use styrofoam to create a relief print. An edition of at least three prints was expected. The prints to the left were created by Haley.

The students created a flip book to practice their first middle school portraits. They were to create two flips to be realistic portraits that show true facial proportions. The other two portraits could be anything including super heroes, cartoon characters or totally made up creatures. There were four portraits in all. I took pictures of each student's first portrait. There are videos of a few of the finished projects. The portrait to the left was created by Reanna.

We practiced a variety of shading techniques before creating these fun still life drawings. The students were expected to shade with one light source and add a colorful, patterned background. The students' works featured on this page are created by Arianna to the left and Feleciana and Katie below. See the entire class' works on the video below.
We practiced a variety of one point perspective drawings together. For the final project, I asked the students to pick either a road, a room or shapes. They needed to add a good amount of detail which was demonstrated for them numerous times and they needed to add some organic forms. Here is the result of two weeks of diving deep into one point. The piece to the left was created by "?". To see practice pieces and the rest of the class' work, click here.

The Art 1, 7th and 8th grade, students have been traveling through art history starting with the prehistoric drawings of long ago. At this time they are looking at the works of ancient China. Though we study the works of long ago, I encourage the students to do the art in their own way. Our focus is on shape and value at this time. This composition was about drawing shape before detail. The students were expected to create detailed compositions and use two watercolor techniques, wet on wet and layering. The composition to the left is by Ryan. Click on the link below to see the rest of the class' work. If the work was turned in on time, it is featured.
