Students were expected to trust the process meaning that they should adjust as they work. If something isn’t working go another direction. To call it complete it had to have at least 5 media/layers. Layers could be: Base, Background, Focal Point, Textures/Patterns, Embellishments, drawing/painting, and possibly a Quote. Unity was very important in this project. It has to look neatly put together. We joked, but it is true...If you put it on the floor, it should not look like someone dropped a piece of trash on the floor. It should have clean edges and everything needed to be glued down properly.
Students chose between creating a series of 12 simple gesture drawings/paintings or 2 more complex drawings. They were supposed to show the line of action and give the figure form. The figure should look like they are moving. We talked about the difference between dynamic and static line.
With this art project, students started with experimenting with the medium as usual. They got to choose a project to complete more independently afterwards. The purpose of the project was show the students learning from experimenting with printmaking. You should notice proper use of ink to accomplish a good print, a clean print without fingerprints and smudges, and use of detail. The students were expected to create an edition of 3 or more. Some students also included their practice pieces.
