I am Mistress Micheila MacCallum, OP. I have been a very active member of the SCA since 1985.
I started in Southern Shores in the Mists and now live and play in Danegeld Tor in Cynagua.
I dabble in a couple of different art forms, but my passion is hand embroidery. I started out teaching myself the basic stitches and then received wonderful guidance and support from a few amazing needle workers along the way.
Most of my art has been done in service, so I don't have it anymore. I have been working on retraining my brain to process the concept of art for art and not just service. There has always been a Zen to it for me. It is, to me, coloring inside the lines with thread. I have so, so much more to say on this, but we can talk about that another time.
Below you will seen some of what I have done over the years. I have 2 projects going on right now with a third one in the planning stages. The research and application one is based on Chinese Hair Embroidery. (see not all filled in yet garden rose. the dark red in the fill is my hair.) We can talk more about this later too.
Otherwise I am just working on consistency of my stitches.
Thank you for stopping by and I look forward to reading your comments, feedback and answering your questions.
beginning of Queen's rose pouch for Helga Silk wool blend on linen. Stem stitch.
Continued work on Helga's pouch/haversack.
Finished Helga's bag. The blue/green around the edge is hand spun and hand died, (not by me) silk wool blend. It is there to represent that She also Reigned in the Mists. The Swan charm is there to remind her of where she came from.
Silk on silk very first Mists Princess Rose Pouch. gold beaded center with, yes that is a real black pearl.
Linen fabric, DMC cotton for the outline. The fill is my hair. This project is based on Chinese Hail Embroidery. Theirs is all in black for all the obvious reasons, So this is my interpretation of it.
This piece is done for THL Rhys ap Gwion Baird. The art is a modified version of a mandala to make it more like him and his persona. Linen fabric. wool, silk, linen, bamboo, soy threads. This piece taught me quite clearly that I need to not pull so tight on my stitches. Yes, the textural highs and lows are deliberate.
