Week of September 6th/ Reviewing Lines

Students will be able to review the different types of lines often used when drawing. Then students will be able to draw a design using some of the lines. Once the lines are drawn using oil pastels, students can paint into the background using watercolor paints to create an oil pastel/watercolor resist. The slideshow students will view to guide them through the project is attached below.

K Line Design

Week of September 12th/ Working with Shape

Students will be able to cut basic shapes out of colored paper to glue onto a small black sheet of paper to make a collage. They should try not to have any large open spaces. 

Week of September 19th/ Working with Form

Students will be able to add on to their collage project. By folding and curling strips of paper, students will be able to construct a paper sculpture using scissors and glue, on top of their collage.

Week of September 26th/ September Self- Portrait

Students will begin work on a self-portrait book. Each month students will make a self-portrait using a different art material. This week students will use pencil, sharpie, and skin colored crayons.

Week of October 3rd/ Observational Pumpkin Drawing

Students will be able to observe a pumpkin closely to notice its shape, texture, and color. Then they will be able to draw it from observation using oil pastels. Watercolor paint can be added to the background.

Week of October 10th/ October Self- Portrait

Students will be able to work on their October self- portrait. Students will use a combination of oil and chalk pastel for their drawing.

Week of Oct. 17th & 24th/ Skeleton Project

Students will learn how to draw a skeleton head, step by step. Then they will cut it out, glue it to black paper, and add the other parts of the skeleton using q-tips.

Week of Nov. 7th/ November Self- Portrait

Students will be able to make an abstract self- portrait for the month of November,  that they glue to a collage made of colored tissue paper.

Week of Nov. 14th/ Autumn Trees

Students will be able to make a mixed media autumn tree, using sharpie for the trunk and branches, dots of paint for leaves, and pastel for the background. 

Week of Dec. 5th/ Mixed Media Snow Person on Winter Day

Students will be able to combine different materials to make a snow person in a winter landscape. They will learn how to make a shadow of the snow person and then add snow and any other details.

Week of Jan. 3rd/ Lunar New Year Project, Lucky Goldfish Project

Students will be able to learn about how Lunar New Year is celebrated in Asia and various parts of the world. Students will learn how goldfishes are considered good luck in China. Then students will transform a paper plate into a lucky goldfish.

Writing Component: Students will learn how to make the Chinese character for "peace" and add it to their project 

Week of Feb. 6th/ Black History Project, West African Symbol Project

Students will learn what a symbol is and discuss where they see them in their life. Then students will learn about West African culture and how they use symbols.

For their project, students will make an action painting using colors of an African flag and then paint the symbol, adinkrahene on top. It means greatness and leadership.

Week of March 4th & 11th/ Women's History Month, Pacita Abad Group Project

Students will be able to get to know the art of Pacita Abad.  Then on a circular piece of watercolor paper students will use watercolor paints and paint pens to make a painting inspired by Pacita Abad. Then they can each glue their painting on a larger surface. The final step will be to add color to the background of the circles using paint.

Week of March 18th & April 8th/ Poetry Month, "I Am" Poetry

Students will work on a mixed media project that involves their photograph, an abstract painting, and words that describe who they are.

Week of April 10th/ Earth Day Project, Toilet Paper Roll Butterflies

Students will be able to watch a video about ways in which we can all do our part to help the Earth. Then students will be able to transform a toilet paper roll into a beautiful butterfly. Through this project students will explore symmetry and design.
