Week of Sept. 6th, 11th, & 18th/ "I Am" Portraits

First grade are working on a self-portrait project that explores realistic portrait drawing, abstraction, and includes autobiographical writing. The slideshow being used to guide them through the project is attached.

Week of October 9th & 16th/ In honor of Latinx Month

Pre-Colombian Symbols

Students will be able to explore the art and culture of Colombia, specifically looking at symbols made by indigenous people from the area centuries ago. Students will learn what indigenous means, they will be able to draw a symbol of their choosing with black oil pastel, and then paint over it using translucent earth tone tempera paints. 

Week of October 23rd/ Pumpkin Drawings

Students will be able to learn how to draw a realistic drawing of a pumpkin, step by step.

Week of October 31st/ Halloween Masks

Students will be able to transform a paper plate into a mask using a variety of art materials. The theme is students driven but should be school appropriate.

Week of Nov. 7th & 14th/ Autumn Tree

Students will be able to use sharpie and dots of paint to create an autumn tree. Then using pastels, students will create a background of their choosing.

Writing Component/ Gratitude notes

Week of Nov. 27th/ Totem Pole Group Project, In Celebration of Native American History Month

Students will be able to watch a video that explains what a totem pole is and the significance of it in a Native American community. Then students will make a drawing of an animal that will be included in a totem pole.

Week of Nov. 28th/ Paper Snowflake

Students will be able to learn an easy way of making a snowflake out of white paper.

Week of Jan. 8th/ Diversity Group Project/ In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday

Students will be able to learn the different ways in which people are diverse. Then, as a group, students will work on a project that celebrates the different colors that we are. Students will be able to make a thumbprint of their skin color inside the shape of a dove. 

Week of Jan. 2nd, 8th, & 15th/ Lunar New Year Lanterns

In celebration of Lunar New Year students will watch a video about the holiday and see how it is different than the way we celebrate the new year. Then students will learn how to transform a red piece of paper into a 3-D Lunar New Year lantern. When finished the lanterns will be hung outside the 1st Grade classrooms.

Week of Feb. 8th, 15th/ Black History Month Project, Shield

In Kenya, tribes make shields for boys entering adulthood. Each shield is handed down from generation to generation. A new design is painted over the previous one for the next person in line. 

Students will be able to design their own shield using some of the design elements from Kenya and black and white paint.


Week of March 4th / Women's History Month, Louise Nevelson Inspired Relief Sculptures

Students will be able to learn about the art of Louise Nevelson. Then they will work on a project where they will use all sorts of founds objects to repurpose them in a relief sculpture. Like Louise Nevelson's sculptures, the final projects will be painted using one color.

Week of April 10th/ Earth Day Project, Bottle Top Flowers

Students will be able to learn the value of recycling and repurposing materials we use everyday. Then students will be able to transform bottle caps into a flower.

Week of April 24th/ Poetry Month, "I Am"

Students will view the poetry/art piece by Paul Klee. Then students will develop a poem about themselves that will be turned into art.

Week of May 1st/ Outdoor Drawings at Wesley

Students will be able to find an area to sit in the courtyard or field to make an observational drawing, considering the shapes of details, colors they see, and textures.
