Week of 9/5 & 9/11,  Hand Group Project

Students will work on a group project that celebrates how we are unique and also connected. Students will make prints of their hand on colored paper, which will be put together to make a large group project.

Writing Component: Students will write a short "I Am" poem using a prompt.

Week of 9/18th, 25th, & Oct. 2nd,  Self- Portraits, 

Me and My Shadow

Students will work on drawing their body in proportion, step by step. Then they can add color. Once finished students will cut out their self-portrait and trace it on black paper to make their shadow/silhouette. Both cut outs will be glued onto colored paper. Students will include a short written piece about themselves.

Writing Component: Students will write a sentence sharing their name in Spanish

Week of October 2nd, In honor of Latinx Month

Pre-Colombian Inspired Metal Embossing

Students will be able to explore the art and culture of Colombia, specifically looking at the significance of gold. The students will be able to draw one of the Pre-Colombian pendant designs on thin, gold metal sheets, which they will emboss.

Week of Oct. 16th/ Mixed Media Autumn Landscapes 

Students will be able to learn what mixed media is in an artwork. Students will then look at the artwork of artist Wolf Kahn, known for his landscapes with brilliant colors. Then students will make an autumn landscape drawing using chalk pastels, oil pastels, and pain sticks.

Week of Oct 24th/ Paper Plate Masks

Students will be able to transform a paper plate into an exciting mask. Students will have a variety of materials to choose from and can make any kind of mask, provided the theme is school appropriate. 

Week of Nov. 6th/ Thanksgiving Cards

Students will be able to use the beautiful autumn landscapes they made in October to make a Thanksgiving card for their family. Students will take time to think about the things they are thankful for and write them to their family. They can add another drawing in the card if they choose to or work on a "free drawing" once they are finished. 

Week of Nov. 28th & Dec. 5th/ Snow Person With a Shadow

Students will learn how to draw a shadow for a snow person using oil pastels. Then they may add any other details they want. 

Week of Jan. 2nd, 8th, & 15th/ Lunar New Year Mixed Media Panda Project

Students will watch a short video on Lunar New Year. Then, students will be able to learn how pandas are treasured in China. For the art project, students will learn a step by step method of making a panda portrait and use a combination of oil pastels and charcoal. In the background area students will add one of their favorite things, bamboo. The bamboo will be created using oil pastel and watercolors will be painted into the background.

Writing Component: Student will choose from a group of Chinese Characters to write into their background as well as a wish they have for the new year.

Week of January 8th & 16th/ Language Diversity Project, In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday

Students will be able to learn the different ways in which people are diverse. Then, as a group, students will work on a project that celebrates different languages. This project is inspired by artist, Chris Riggs. Examples of his work are below.

Week of Jan. 30th, Feb. 1st & 6th/ Black History Month, African Drums

Students will be able to learn the importance of the African drum. Through videos and stories, students will see how they are made and the purposes of the drum. Then, using paper cups, paint, canvas, string and beads, students will design a drum using elements  they saw in the African drums.

Week of Feb. 26th, March 4th, & 11th/ Women History Month, Project Sonia Delaunay Project

Students will be able to work on a wearable art project inspired by the creative art of Sonia Delaunay. Students will explore the use of geometric shapes and bold contrasting colors, reminiscent of the artist's style.

Week of March 13th & 20th/ Poetry Month, Acrostic Poem

Students will see and hear several examples of acrostic poems. Then students can come up with a variety of possible themes before deciding on one to create an acrostic poem about. 

Week of April 10th & 17th/ Earth Day Project, Bottle Cap Mirror

Students will learn the value and fun of recycling and repurposing everyday materials. The students will be able to decorate a small mirror by repurposing bottle caps.
