Week of September 5th & 11th/ Target Group Painting

Students will view the circular paintings of Vassily Kandinsky. Then they will make a painting in his style, which will be cut in quarters and rearranged with other student's circular paintings on a large sheet of paper.

Week of September 18th, 25th, & Oct. 2nd/ Side Profile Self- Portrait

Students will work on a side profile self- portrait that includes elements of their identity such as: their interests, personality traits, favorite subjects in school, important numbers and people, etc. Some examples of this project are attached below.

Week of Oct. 9th & 16th In Celebration of Latinx Month

Pre- Colombian Mask Designs 

Students will be able to explore the art and culture of Colombia. Then students will see designs made by Pre-Colombian artists centuries ago and choose one to replicate on scratchboard paper.

Week of Oct 24th/ Paper Monsters

Students will be able to learn how fold their paper and line up their drawing to create two different expressions of a monster. Students are encouraged to be whimsical and fun while school appropriate.

Week of Nov 7th & 14th/ Autumn Tree Paintings, One Point Perspective

Students will be able to watch a short video that guides them through an autumn tree painting lesson step by step. Then students will use what they learned to create a landscape in one point perspective.

Week of Nov 27th & Dec. 4th/ Mixed Media Guitar Project, 

Working from Observation & Tapping into Creativity

Students will be able to draw a guitar from observation. Then they can cut it out and add color using a variety of different kinds of papers. To complete the project, students will make a painting on canvas and glue the guitar to it.

Week of Dec. 5th & 12th/ Diversity Project

Students will discuss the different ways in which people are diverse. Then, using pieces of different magazine faces, students will create a portrait that reflects diversity.

Writing Component: Students will write a sentence about diversity

Week of Jan.3rd, 9th, & 15th/ Lunar New Year Korean Drum Project

Lunar New Year is celebrated in different ways in parts of Asia. The students will hear about how it is celebrated in Korea, with eating traditional foods, honoring the ancestors, and playing games with family.

Then students will learn how to make a hand drum using paper plate, chopsticks, string, beads, and paint. Students will add a Korean influence, incorporating a symbol seen on the flag. 

Writing Component: Students will be able to write a word in Korean to add to their drum using sharpie 

Week of Jan. 29th & Feb. 5th, & 12th/ Black History Month, Yinka Shonibare Mask Project

Yinka Shonibare is a contemporary, British-Nigerian artist who explores cultural identity through his brightly colored Ankara fabric masks.

The students will be able to construct a mask using a paper plate and found objects. Then they will use African textiles to glue on top in the style of Shonibare's masks, seen below.

Week of Feb. 26th, March 4th, & 11h/ Women's History Month, Betty Woodman Project

Students will explore the work of artist, Betty Woodman. Then students will create a flower in vase mixed media work of art incorporating air dry clay and printmaking. 

Week of March 13th & 20th/ Poetry Month, "If I Were a Color"

Students will think about a color they like and write notes about the color including what the color reminds them of, what they like about the color, and how it makes them feel. Then students will make a painting using monochromatic color. Lastly, students can write a poem using their notes, that will be written somewhere on their painting.

Week of April 8th & 15th/ Chumash Cave Paintings

Students will be able to learn the significance of the symbols found on Chumash cave paintings, they will learn how to make a fresco, and use charcoal to draw symbols on the fresco while in the dark.

Week of April 22nd, 29th & May 6th/ Earth Day Project, Cork Towers Inspired by Watts Towers

Students will be able to work with the group at their table to construct a large tower. Students will consider what they want their theme to be and how each person can contribute to their goal.
