Over the span of 6 months, I worked with the Cheerful Life Foundation. I first met K. Vera Hung, founder and head of the foundation which is originally from Hong Kong, at the ServICE 9ICS conference. Since then, I contacted her and arranged for myself to be an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher for the children that the foundation helped, free of charge. I made lesson plans every week & taught 2 groups of children from 10-12. At 2 pm, I arranged activities that taught them about several things such as continents, fruits, etc. I learnt a lot over the time of this internship and gained experience working every week and meeting new people and working under older people.

Volunteer Experience at the English House with the HDF Mercy Centre

  • Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

  • Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

  • Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 pm onwards, I assisted hardworking, intelligent, and beautiful children who received full scholarships to International Schools such as RIS, CIS, and GIS. To help them, I assisted with science and language activities assigned by their teachers at school, which was difficult as it was harder to help kids who were older (6-7th grade). I thoroughly enjoyed this activity because it was so inspiring seeing these children give their all into this education that was provided to them. The hardwork and perseverance these children had was truly what encouraged me to give them my all and help them in every way possible. I learnt a lot of new skills, which included working with new people, teaching in ways that can be creative, and being patient with the students that requested for help. After a few days, I got the hang of it! I attended the homework sessions every week for almost 6 months. I truly enjoyed my time :)
