CAS Project: Painting Warhammer Minis
It started with me brain storming for ideas, I looked at the IB learner profile and saw " Open Minded" and " Risk Taker". This made me thought about doing something that I previously didn't like. After sometime I remember my hatred/dislike of art, at first I was hesitant on doing anything about art even if it correlates/fits the IB learner profile so I asked one of my friends who is a god at art or atleast very skilled compared to me. He suggested me to start with something small like painting miniatures ( which he is doing). After some time, he convinced me to start painting Warhammer miniatures.
Before actually painting the miniatures I have to pick a "faction" that I like, there are many interesting factions in warhammer but I was very interested in two factions the Tyranids and the Astra militarum. The Tyranids are aliens that will eat and consume all living and biomass in unfortunate galaxies leaving no one or creature behind. I found them interesting because not only is the lore cool but also they remind me of the Kaijus from Pacific Rim. The other faction The Astra militarum can be thought of as humanity, most of their forces compromises of soldiers and vehicles and the reason they fight is for survival and for their emperor. They are seen as the underdogs of this universe and rely on numbers and firepower to defeat their enemies. Because I really liked the underdogs I chose to paint and buy Astra militarum minis. While looking for these minis I found out that they are very expensive and due to the fact that I am funding this project myself I couldn't make/buy a big army. So I had to choose what is the most economical and interesting. My friend also advised me to buy sets but due to the huge cost a set is for little ol me I couldn't buy one so I resorted to buying the singular minis and boxes. Before buying the minis I did some research on what paints and colours I would want to have and get but my friend said I don't really need to follow how Game workshop wants me to paint and I should just paint it how I wanted to. So I bought very dark colours and metallic colours because those are the colours that I really liked. Overall I spent around 2500baht on paint and glue and shading colours alone.
The first minis that I painted was the Heavy weapon squads equipted with motors. I chose this squad because I don't have the money to buy artillery so this would have to do. The heavy motor squad comprises of 3 figures which has 2 soldiers and a motor per figure. The idea of this mini is that the heavy motor squad will provide "light explosive barrages" to the enemies which I found to be interesting. I started with painting the soldiers I used Cadian green and Death korp drab to colour the uniforms ( death korp drab for their uniform and Cadian green for armour) and painted the motor and guns black and bronze ( Abbadon black and I used Brass scorpion bronze to highlight the motor's opening ). After that I also painted the insignias that are on the soldiers armour to be either bronze or silver. For the "skin colour" I mixed peach colour with corax white to get that light peach colour that I want. Glasses on the soldiers are painted black and helmets are painted cadian green. This took me 4 days to paint per figure ( due to school as well as homework) so in total it took me 12 days. I also bought a technical ( paint for the circle thingy) and grass to show that they are on a terrain I also painted sandbags brown. ( 1845 thb)
After my first few minis I bought a pack of a Death Korp of Kreig squad as my infantry ( 2000 baht in total), the death korp of kreig are zelous soldiers that are willing to die and fight in any scenario for their emperor. Due to their design being influenced my German uniforms from the first world war I I painted them abit grey with mixes of green. I painted their bags brown and their belts brown but I painted their uniform a mix of mechanicus grey mixed with death korp drab green giving this weird dark greyish colour, I then painted their guns black with Abbadon black and painted bayonets , clubs, and swords with a silver colour. One of the kreigsmen has a flame thrower so I highlighted and painted the metallic parts of the flame thrower with Brass bronze. I also bought new technical for them because I really like the grey colour so I used Astrogranite as a technical ), there's also a special figure with a medic bag so I used Corax white to paint that bag white. It took me around 10 days for 5 figures so around 2 days per mini. after awhile I wanted to experiment with new things and colours so I bought glow in the dark colours and applied it on the grass that's on the figure's circular base, personally I think it looks very cool.
After getting my infantry squad done I bought a leman russ tank, This is just a normal main battle tank that is a staple of all Astramilitarum army so because of this it was a no brainer pick up. It costs around 1900 baht per tank, due to this price tag I could only get one ( this is very sad ).The leman Russ that I made is fitted with a battle cannon turret and a Laz cannon secondary gun. First I painted the whole tank with Mechnicus grey and anally and painstakingly painted each and every bolt and welding that is on the tank with a copper colour called hashnut copper. I also painted any exterior or welding metal with a silver mechnicus colour. The tracks of the tank is coloured with Abbadon black. The laz cannon is painted with abbadon black and then fitted with copper rings and a silver mechanicus tip. I also painted the little window on the tank with mechnicus silver. I also took creative liberty in painting bits of the tank with mechnicus silver to show that the colour is wearing off due to war or battle. I also shaded the sides of the tank to emulate dust and soil on the tank I shaded this with agrax earth shade. Then to the commander, I painted the commander like how I painted the Kreigsmen but I painted the shoulder pads green, I also fitted the commander with an extra kreigsmen head that I had. This took me 11 days to finish but it was worth it.
After the Leman Russ tank I bought myself an APC ( armored personnel carrier ) one of the few decent APCs that are in the Astra militarum inventory is the Chimera APC. I bought the Chimera APC for 1800 baht, I fitted the APC with a boltgun turret and a boltgun ( a bolt gun is a machine gun) secondary the reason for this is because I want to have some anti infantry vehicle in my very small army. Just like the Leman russ I painted the chasis and the APC itself with mechnicus grey and the tracks with Abbadon black. The guns are painted black and fitted with the copper colour, like the Leman russ I painted every bolt and welding copper, the hatches are painted silver. But here I really improved my shading skills well atleast in making the darn thing look abit more dirty and dark, I mostly applied shading to the chasis of the APC and the tracks. The msot time consuming part of this whole thing is painting the weldings.
By chance my friend who has an extra Astra militarum heavy weapons team, the reason he had this is because it was in one of the packs that he bought so he sold it to me for cheap ( 200 baht), Just like what I did for the Heavy motor squads I painted the soldiers with Cadian green ann death korp drab. The only big difference is the weapon, I painted the laz cannon black and the shield with cadian green , the Laz cannon was also fitted with silver rings. But everything stays the same just like for the heavy motors team/squad.
The lord Solar Leontus is supposed to also be here but due to me running out of paint and money for the paints I couldn't finish it. When I came back from my winter break to continue my project the 2 of the 10 paint that I needed dried up and I ran out of 6 while painting him and it would cost me around 1500 thb to buy all 8 of those paints which I couldn't really afford at the moment since I had too many things that I had to pay ( phone bill etc etc) So I had to abandon this mini
Image of Lord Solar Leontus from (https://www.goldengoblingames.com/th/warhammer-40k-astra-militarum-lord-solar-leontus.html) ( it would've been so cool to have him in my army but I think I'll finish painting him after grade 12 since I should have some more disposable income by then)
From this CAS project I've learned to respect art and how hard it is to actually make good/decent art let alone paint jobs. I also grew a bit more fond of art ( painting minis) because I find the painting of these miniatures to be therapeutic. I feel like I also learned many types of artistic techniques such as highlighting where I would highlight the borders of the miniature's/points to highlight features of the miniature that would help it look nice. I also learned colour usage techniques such as colour theory and which colour would look nice with which colour. I also learned how to effectively use and do shading to make the miniatures either look darker or dirtier. I also experimented with glow in the dark colours which I really enjoyed because it helps my minitures look very cool and shine in the dark. From this CAS experience I believe that budgeting and efficiently using colours and not wasting any of the colours would help me truly finish the project since I would then have extra cash to buy supplies if needed or maybe be abit less careless and more careful about how I keep my paints so they don't dry out.
The Total cost of this whole project is 10,245 including all minis and colours and terrain bought
"A new challenge may be an unfamiliar experience or an extension of an existing one. The newly acquired or developed skills may be shown through experiences that the student has not previously undertaken or through increased expertise in an established area."
The CAS learning outcome from this experience is second learning outcome " Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process", the reason for this is because I experience/ did something that I wasn't really proficient at nor did I previously like. But from this experience and the challenge which was painting minifigures I have increased my "expertise" and skill in art/painting, I also grown to be abit more open minded about art and actually start to enjoy doing/making art a little bit more now.
