General Objectives in Grade 6:
Develop observation skills
Art History - Prehistoric through the Middle Ages
Body proportions/awareness of the figure
Exploration of a variety of media

Building art vocabulary base - ability to critique, interpret, and discuss
Synthesize/build upon learning objectives from elementary experience, multiple strands within a lesson
Expand student’s concept of form to include the illusion of form on a 2-D surface
Objectives related to the Elements & Principles of Design in Grade 6:
1. Line
Use of line as an expressive tool for the artist
Awareness of how each line affects the picture plane and other lines within the picture plane
Use of line to create value, texture, form rhythm, and/or movement
2. Shape and Space
Awareness of positive and negative space
Exploring shape as a theme using variation, repetition, pattern, and imagination
Awareness of symmetrical/asymmetrical shape (formal/informal) and balance
Study of proportions, i.e., animals, human figure, still life.
Rules of perspective, i.e., overlapping, foreground, middle ground, and background
3. Color
Introduction to color harmonies
Color mixing/matching
Warm vs. cool color
Tints, hues, values and shades
Non-traditional sources of color
4. Form
Building a balanced 3-D design
Hand building and modeling clay (craftsmanship)
Shape relationship (positive/negative)
Awareness of light interaction on form
Texture as a component of design
5. Composition
Awareness of balance, unity, and contrast within design planning
Development of the center of interest/focal point
Use of variation and repetition of the art elements in design planning
Developing a trained eye to creatively and critically assess a work
