The Wellesley Middle School Library program focuses on literacy and information skills and helps assist students in becoming responsible users of information and lovers of reading.
SUMMER READING 2025 INFO COMING SOON!
In a typical school year, students have the opportunity to visit the library on their own:
Before school from 7:20-7:40
After school from 2:30-3:30
During Flex and classes with teacher permission
During these times, students have access to over 12,000 fiction and nonfiction. Students are welcome to check out books, work independently, read, and meet quietly with small groups.
The WMS library is staffed by a full-time librarian and full-time library assistant, both of whom are available to help students with research, book selection, and computers.
In addition to providing a resource for all readers, the library curriculum provides valuable education when it comes to research and information literacy, with a strong focus on evaluating sources for reliability, readability, currency, and relevance. In a world in which students have endless information available at their fingertips, the skills are taught collaboratively by the librarian and classroom teacher and give students the tools needed to be savvy users of information.
Library Orientation: Students learn both the rules and regulations of the library and also get a preview of the year to come.
TRAC (which stands for Trustworthy, Relevant, Accessible, and Current) is introduced as a way to check information sources.
The library is a thriving and busy part of the school, and since the teaching is done collaboratively with curriculum-area teachers, new projects and ideas are always being added. The education students receive in the library is useful across all curriculum areas and helps prepare students for their high school experience.
