The Technology and Engineering Department is proud of the Makerspace courses at Wellesley Middle School! These courses provide an opportunity for hands on problem-solving, learning about engineering practices, understanding about basic design principles and the design and creation of wood products. Students apply concepts from the Massachusetts Standards for Science and Engineering & Technology and the Wellesley Middle School Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Guide in our MakerSpace laboratories to their coursework.
This exploratory program for 6th graders provides an initial exposure to a range of design and engineering concepts and practices. Hands-on activities center around simple machines, design and construction of paper structures, and woodworking projects. At the start of each project, students learn to make plans that will support their success. Additionally, students learn how to use tools safely and effectively and are introduced to careers in the fields of technology and engineering. Sixth Grade Makerspace fosters creative thinking, group problem solving, and an understanding of the iterative design process. The 7th grade course builds upon the skills and content students are exposed to in 6th grade.
