MULTIPLE WINNER ELECTIONS

This site provides an overview of three voting methods which can be used for mutiple winner elections: cumulative voting, single transferable voting, and approval voting. Each module provides important vocabulary, an indepth lesson of the topic, and several excercises for students to test their new knowledge. A final review is given for students to test their new skills after completeing all three modules with a list of resources for future study.

Common Core Standards and Mathematical Practices

7th Grade: Number Systems

7.NS.A.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract integers and other rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

7.NS.A.3 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with integers and other rational numbers.

Mathematical Practices

MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

MP.3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this teaching module is to provide students with a brief, but comprehensive introduction to multiple winner election voting systems. We will discuss cumulative voting, single transferable voting, and approval voting.

Students will gain understanding of the methodology behind each voting process, and will be provided with quizzes and examples of each method to better understand how each one works. Students will compare voting methods and discern the pros and cons associated with each method.
