Can I take a music class if I have never been in Band, Choir, or Orchestra?
YES. Many students join Choir, Music Theory, and Music Plugged-In classes every year who have not participated in Band, Choir, or Orchestra. If you are interested in playing an instrument and have not participated in Band or Orchestra, please contact Mrs. Freeberg, Mr. Osika, or Mrs. Watras - we would love to help you get started!
What if I am not sure if I want to do music in high school?
If you are interested in music, but unsure about continuing in high school, you should still sign up for the music classes you are interested in on your course selection form. It is very important for your counselors to know your interests so that they can better help you. It is much easier to build your high school schedule with music in place from the start, rather than trying to add it back in later.
How is music different in high school?
While the actual act of performing music is similar, the social network and safety net that high school music provides is very different from middle school. From day one, you will be musically and personally mentored by successful upperclassmen who have a vested interest in your success. You will have dozens of new and like-minded friends before school even begins and have experiences that are unlike anything you have experienced in middle school.
Can I do music and sports?
YES. There might be occasional conflicts, but know that our music department works hard to resolve as many conflicts as possible before they occur and to work collaboratively to solve them when they arise.
How much out of school time is required?
The many ensembles have different requirements for participation. Some ensembles require very little (less than standard homework) while other ensembles require more substantial commitment. Generally, the greater the level of commitment, the greater the reward and memories. Regardless of the ensemble, a year-long calendar will be provided well in advance to help you plan for these events.
Do I have to attend lessons?
Students who are enrolled in Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Orchestra, and Philharmonic Orchestra are required to attend weekly small group lessons during the school day. Lessons rotate to a different class period each week, minimizing the amount of time missed in any one subject area.
Am I allowed to miss lessons? What if I have a test/lab during my lesson?
We understand that our music students are enrolled in rigorous coursework and will from time to time need to remain in class for special circumstances like group work, labs, or exams. Students are given lesson make-up opportunities throughout the marking period.
Can I fit more than one music class into my schedule?
YES, however it does depend on what specific courses and other electives you have signed up for. As you get older your school schedule tends to become more flexible, so many of our upperclassmen take several different music classes within the school day. You are always encouraged to sign up for ALL music classes that you are interested in, even if you think they may not fit in your schedule. Your counselors and school schedulers will do their best to fit in as many of your requests as possible.
Am I allowed to drop a music class if I change my mind in the middle of the school year?
Students are encouraged to make a one-year commitment to the music class(es) they sign up for, however there are some exceptions. Your music teachers truly want to see you succeed and will do whatever they can to support you in your coursework before approving a drop.
