Sixth Graders -
During the 6th grade year, we will be learning about social awareness in order to improve our social and emotional learning skills. Social awareness is to understand the social world around us and making decisions to respond appropriately. It involves everything from understanding social expectations in various situations and reading social cues to developing empathy and perspective-taking.
Here are just a few skills we will be learning about
Understanding social expectations
Being a good sport
Showing manners
Understanding nonverbal social cues
Understanding and showing respect
Disagreeing respectfully with others
Learning to perspective-take
Being sensitive to the needs of others
Showing empathy
Being kind and compassionate
Here are some questions and topics you may want to discuss i the next coming weeks.
Why is it important to think about how others feel?
How can you show empathy towards others?
Shat manners have you used today?
How can you be respectful when you disagree with someone?
Why are kindness and compassion important qualities?
I am excited to join the Wake Forest Middle School team as the new seventh grade counselor this year. I will collaborate with students to foster a positive sense of self and well-being, assist them in discovering their strengths, and help them to maximize their potential as learners and citizens of their communities. I also look forward to teaming up with families and caregivers, as they support our students. Seventh grade is a time to continue to build skills learned in sixth grade that will further students' success as learners and friends. I will work with them individually, in small groups, and in classroom lessons to support their needs as unique individuals. The following are examples of topics that may be covered in these various settings:
engaging in healthy relationships
respect for self and others
study skills and organization
taking care of oneself
building positive habits
developing coping strategies
managing one's emotions
