Course Registration for 2023-2024

**Please note that current 8th graders typically complete this process mid-February through March. Current 6th and 7th graders typically complete this process mid-March through mid-April. Updates will be included in Dr. Bradford's Weekly Principal Messages.**

Course registration is an exciting time for students to select courses in order to explore interests and deepen their understanding of subject material. Our middle school courses are aligned to local, state and national standards. Students take 6 courses each semester. Schedules for students typically include four core classes (Math, English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and Science), Physical Education (year-long), and one elective each semester. The majority of electives are only one semester in length, however some electives are year-long (these are noted in registration documents).

Selection and registration for core classes is based on teacher recommendations from the student's current core teachers. Middle school students are asked to select 4 electives they are interested in taking. Please note that some electives require a prerequisite. This means that a specific course must be completed (sometimes with a specific grade earned) prior to taking this higher level course.

Students will be selecting their elective choices for the upcoming school year.  They will be using the “Class Registration” option in PowerSchool to select 2 primary elective preferences and 2 alternate choices for the upcoming school year.  "Alternate choices" are electives that the student would like to take if their primary electives are not available or do not work with their schedule. All electives should be chosen carefully as changes will not be made if a selected course (primary or alternate) is received.

Note: We will do our best to schedule students in at least one of their primary selections. Final decisions regarding elective class offerings are subject to changes based on student interest and staff availability. Please help remind students that if they have not taken Digital Literacy/Keyboarding we strongly encourage them to select that class as one of their elective options. It helps to build a strong foundation that is helpful in all middle school and high school course work.

Rising 9th Grade (Current 8th Grade)

High School registration for rising 9th graders is coordinated by the 8th grade counselor. The 8th grade counselor works collaboratively with WCPSS high schools to ensure that students are following recommendations specific to their assigned high school. All high schools have open houses for rising 9th graders to learn about course options - click here for more info.

Students are asked to select primary electives and "alternate electives" during the course registration process. Alternates are electives that the student would like to take if their other electives are not available or do not work with their schedule. It is very likely you may receive a mix of your primary and alternate selections, so please make course selections carefully.
