Kindergarten

At Washington, Kindergarteners attend music class once a week. The focus in Kindergarten music is exposure and experience. Students will move, speak, sing, and play with a wide variety of musical selections. They will be exposed to new music as they start to imitate and identify sounds they are able to make on their own. More specifically, in alignment with North Carolina and National Core Arts standards, here is what we have been working on:

We have been listening, moving, and playing along to Camille Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals. This is a collection of short pieces based on different animals. We started with the Aviary (birds) & the Elephant. The Aviary uses high, fast sounds, just like a bird sounds and moves, while the Elephant uses low and slow sounds. Each week, we learn another movement. Take a listen- which one is your favorite?

Ask your child to sing this song for you! We are using it to discuss short-short (bub-ble) and long (gum) sounds which will lead us to reading rhythm patterns. It has quickly become a class favorite.
