First grade students at Washington attend specials once a week through Semesters 1 & 2, then on a rotating schedule for the remainder of the year. In first grade music we focus on reading short rhythm and pitch patterns, identifying and playing classroom instruments, and beginning to identify simple form. Here is what we've been working on:
We used the rhyme "Cobbler, Cobbler" to practice steady beat, differentiate between beat and rhythm, and begin to decode. Students track the steady beat with beat charts and read rhythm through iconic notation. We even figured out the rhythm using our shoes as music notes! Ask your child to share the rhyme with you.
We learned the song "Snail, Snail" to begin reading so-mi-la patterns. Here, we used icons to map out and read the melody.
