Second graders at Washington attend music once a week for the first semester, then on an rotating schedule for the remainder of the year. In second grade music, we continue music literacy, learning more complex rhythm and pitch patterns. We focus on improvisation and students create music and movement of their own. Here's what we've been doing:
We learned "Here Comes a Bluebird" to tackle a number of musical concepts. We added an accompaniment pattern on the xylophones, focused on new pitches do and re, and reinforced our knowledge of half notes, which get two beats. Students read the song measure by measure and had to put them in the correct order!
After learning the song, "Rocky Mountain" students worked in groups to create their own version of the song. They were tasked with changing the lyrics, adding dynamics, adding instrumentation, and preparing a final performance. During in class performances students are encouraged to reflect on themselves and their classmates. We learn to give meaningful and positive feedback.
