BEGINNING VISUAL ARTS
This course introduces the elements and principles of design through an exploration of a broad range of media. Activities emphasize skills and techniques in the following areas: drawing, painting, graphics, fibers, ceramics, art history, and three-dimensional design (fibers, ceramics, etc.).

Please contact me at rcrosenthal@wcpss.net if acquiring these supplies is going to be an issue and we will make arrangements. The supplies listed below are REQUIRED DAILY and should be obtained no later than Tuesday 9/2/2025
8.5”x 11” (or 9”x12”) Unlined Spiral or Hardbound Sketchbook. Sketchbooks must be bound and open on the left. Avoid sketch ‘pads’ bound by tape or glue at the top and sketchbooks with perforations as these often do not hold up. The paper should be for drawing or mixed media.

EXPECTATIONS /CLASS RULES
FOOD: No food should be out when in class. Drinks with a lid are acceptable.
CELL PHONES: Students should place phones in their assigned phone pouch when they enter the class. Student cell phones, earbuds, and smartphones should not be seen during instructional time unless they are being used for educational purposes.
BATHROOMS: You MUST sign out and take up the pass when you leave to go to the bathroom. Please let me know that you are leaving (in case of fire drill or lockdown). Cell phones must remain in the classroom when you go to the bathroom.
Be AWARE of yourself and others (Practice the three “R’s” of Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships as they relate to your instructor, fellow students, and your environment. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Use your creativity. NO TRACING, NO COPYING other people’s artwork. Try not to rely on copying images directly, use them for inspiration.**Turning in work completed by other students, friends, or family, is considered plagiarism and violates the WCPSS Honors Code

Need Help? Don’t understand the instructions? Confused? I AM HERE TO HELP YOU! Never hesitate to ask me (your teacher) clarifying questions, to explain something in a different way or to demonstrate a technique for you.
LATE WORK
Every Assignment has a due date & the expectation is that students complete the work by that due date. This class adheres to the CHS late work policy as stated in the handbook. (10 pt deduction per day)
ATTENDANCE
Much of your grade in this class will be based on your artwork/projects. To be successful in this class it is necessary for students to attend class regularly, & to use class time wisely. The weekly agenda will be posted on canvas under ‘announcements’ so you can see what we are doing in class if you miss class. You are responsible for your missed work and making up the missed work time on projects. Attend SMART lunch sessions as needed. Please let me know when possible if you will miss class ahead of time, or if you will be out for more than 2 days.
*EXAM EXEMPTIONS- There is a final exam in this class. Students who have 10 or less absences during the semester may be exempt from taking the final exam if they meet the grade requirements
