Proficient (Honors)

Course Description:

Recommended prerequisite(s): Visual Arts – Beginning Sculpture/Ceramics and/or Portfolio Review.

Students expand their knowledge and technical abilities in three-dimensional design through the medium of clay (hand building and/or wheel) and other sculptural materials (plaster, wood, wire, paper mache, etc.). All types of construction, glaze formulation, and firing techniques are explored. Form and shape are stressed using materials appropriate to sculpting. Success at the honors level requires rigorous study, excellence in design and production, and extensive knowledge of a variety of art forms.

#1: Addams Family "thing"

Students will create a

#2: Transformation Series

Students will create a series of 5 clay sculptures that demonstrate a progression of transformation from one object to another, entirely different object.

Requirements:

  • Each piece must be a minimum of 5 inches in at least 1 dimension (height, width, or depth)

  • The starting and ending pieces must be clearly recognizable objects with a high level of detail.

  • The three middle pieces must demonstrate an even step in progression from one object to the next.

#3: portrait bust

Students will create sculptural portrait bust utilizing a free modeling approach with a solid block of clay. Students will learn how to realistically model the individual facial features as well as the various proportions of the face and head and apply this knowledge to the creation of their individual portrait busts. Students may complete either a self portrait or a portrait of another individual, and may choose to stylize their bust in creative and inventive ways, but the final piece must have realistic features and proportions. Requirements:

  • ½ Scale (Approximately 7-8 inches tall)

  • Realistic Facial Features and Proportions

  • Head, Neck, and Shoulders

  • Must utilize reference photos (frontal and profile) for accurate features and proportions.
