When I think back on my high school experience, my favorite memories are from the art studio. It was my refuge during the day -- a time to sit, create, and relax away from the sometimes stressful atmosphere of high school. The art program at Wayne Valley allowed me to explore my creative interests freely. I had the opportunity to use a variety of media and consider all kinds of subject matter. One of my favorite pieces I made in high school was a colored pencil drawing of rotten apples. Although I didn't realize it then, food as a subject in my art practice would follow me through my undergraduate career and into my graduate career. I majored in studio art in undergrad and I continue to focus on food in contemporary art currently, in a Masters program in art history at Oxford. I would not be at this point today without the support and kindness I experienced in Wayne Valley's art rooms.

"The art department at Wayne Valley gave me a great foundation that allowed me to apply to art school and inspired me to pursue a career as an artist-educator!"
Allison Economou Class of 2012
High school art classes made me find my place. I always knew I was artistic, but they helped me to learn from the best, explore different mediums, and take my creativity to the next level. From this, I knew I wanted to pursue my art education in college. Having a career I was passionate about was very important to me. Bouncing around from photography to art education to graphic design, I now am able to say my career as a graphic designer in the music industry all stemmed from seeing my potential of turning art into a career back in high school.
