Response to Intervention (RtI)

What is RtI?

Response to Intervention (RtI) is a multi-tiered approach providing data-based instructional practices to all students in the district. RtI allows our teachers to meet the students' needs addressed in core instruction, intervention, and enrichment programming. All students have their progress assessed during three benchmark windows; teachers plan instruction and intervention based on this data. Student support is divided into three tiers within this process. Students at the Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels will have progress monitored more frequently. The RtI process is flexible and designed to meet the needs of the students in the district.

Tier 1 (Core Instruction)

  • In Tier 1, all students receive high quality instruction from their classroom teacher. This instruction is guided by classroom and grade level benchmark assessment data. This plan may or may not include progress monitoring.

Tier 2

  • In addition to the Tier 1, high quality instruction, students who need targeted intervention may be monitored in what we call Tier 2. Students in Tier 2 achieved a score on a universal screening assessment that indicated they may be at risk compared to their peers in this content. Research based interventions (either whole class or small group) are provided in addition to the core instruction. Research based interventions are teaching strategies/programs that have been proved to improve learning. Progress monitoring is completed monthly to see if the students are making growth in their academic performance. Students who are making progress continue in Tier 2, students who need additional support may be moved to Tier 3.

Tier 3

  • Students identified as needing Tier 3 support continue to receive Tier 1 (Core Instruction) and have been part of the RtI process through Tier 2 Interventions and/or scored significantly AT RISK score levels on the universal screening tools administered. Students in Tier 3 have exhibited intense need and are not demonstrating academic growth in the Tier 2 instruction previously provided.
