For the next two days we will examine one of the more complex principles of the Constitution, that being federalism.

Today we will explore the meaning and application of the concept in American government.

For the next two days we will examine one of the more complex principles of the Constitution, that being federalism.

Today we will explore the meaning and application of the concept in American government.

We will look at an example of federalism by looking at the response of local, state, and federal authorities to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Wednesday

Today will be the last day of Unit 1. We will work together to begin to build an argument to answer our Unit Compelling Question.

Unit 2 Compelling Question: Does development and expansion mean progress and improvement?


Supporting Question: Was the West the Land of Opportunity or Oppression?

To open our exploration of American History, we will begin with Post Civil War period. It was a time of drastic change in our history. We will look at how this change affect the people in the West, the North east, and the South. Each area went through dramatic social, economic, and political changes.

We will explore the West through the eyes of the groups of people that lived it. You will click on each item on the table and you will be linked with primary sources related to that group of people. As you read the sources collect data related to their experiences. When you finish each station, you and your partner decide if this group found opportunity or oppression in the West.

A multitude of factors had to come together in a prefect storm to spark the massive industrial growth like the period after the Civil War in US History. Innovations, New technologies, wealth for investment, and a significant population boom had to be in place to support this massive period of growth. We will explore these and then focus on one particular

Case Study: Immigrant Experience

First think that we need to explore is what differentiates "old" from "new" immigration by analyzing charts. Then move to try to understand how the variety of immigrant groups experiences in coming to and living in the United States.
