Daily In-Class Standards are determined by assessing students' ability to meet the NYS Physical Education Standards competently. Each unit will have a variety of standards selected and assessed throughout using the grading rubric below:
4 = Meeting the Standard → Student consistently demonstrates the expected level of competency independently.
3 = Approaching the Standard → Student demonstrates some competency, but inconsistently or with minor support.
2 = Partially Meeting the Standard → Student demonstrates limited competency and requires regular support.
1 = Beginning to Meet the Standard → Student demonstrates entry-level competency and needs consistent support.
0 = Not Meeting the Standard → Student in-class decisions or absences prevent an accurate assessment of the student's ability.
Lifetime Activities 1.4. L2. Demonstrates proficiency and/or refines activity-specific movement skills in one or more lifetime activities.
Strategies and Tactics 2.2. L1. Demonstrates competency of strategies and tactics in a variety of physical activities.
Social awareness and relationship skills 4.2. L1. Applies the qualities of civility and citizenship in physical activity settings.
Challenge 5.2. L1. Selects and participates in physical activities that provide an appropriate level of challenge.
Each Standard will be listed in School Tool. A teacher may assess a single standard over several classes, so students' grades may not always be entered at the same time as their peers. Students have until the end of the unit to demonstrate competency on each assessed Standard.
A student's score for each Standard is a work in progress and may be decreased or increased throughout the unit/grading period, even after it has been entered into School Tool. This provides growth opportunities and instills accountability throughout a unit..
Example: After Class 1 of a Pickleball Unit, the teacher gives Student A, who is struggling with their serve and drop shots, a 2/4 for the Standard "Lifetime Activities 1.4. L2. Demonstrates proficiency and/or refines activity-specific movement skills in one or more lifetime activities." After Class 4, Student A practices and improves their serve and drop shots, so the teacher updates the grade to a 4/4. Student B, who shows competency during Class 1 but fails to do so consistently, may have their grade reduced even after initial entry.
Each student is allowed up to three excused absences per marking period that don't affect their grade. Excused absences include appointments, music lessons, field trips, illness, etc. Any absences over three, whether excused or unexcused, MUST be made up during a study hall or after school, depending on teacher availability.
*Physical Education is a performance/demonstration-based class (90% of overall grade). Missing more than three classes during a Marking Period may impact a student's ability to demonstrate competency on the Standards and impact their grade. All efforts will be made to allow a student to make up missed classes before the end of the marking period. It's the student's responsibility to contact their teacher and find a time to make up classes.
**Cutting class results in 0/4 for skills assessed that day and no remediation.
