Treatments and Outlook
TBI Treatment
Acute management includes surgery to relieve intracranial pressure or remove hematomas. Medications like diuretics, anti-seizure drugs, and coma-inducing drugs are used to control swelling or prevent seizures.
Experimental treatments: Techniques like neuroprotective agents, hypothermia therapy, and stem cell therapy are being explored.
SCI Treatment
Immediate stabilization and surgery to prevent further spinal damage. Long-term treatments include rehabilitation to regain motor functions, physiotherapy, and sometimes, neurostimulation.
Experimental treatments: Regenerative medicine, stem cell therapies, and gene therapies aim to restore spinal cord function.
Outlooks
Outlook: The prognosis depends on the severity of the injury. Mild TBIs often resolve with time, while severe TBIs may lead to lifelong disabilities.
Outlook: Similar to TBI, the outlook depends on the severity and location of the injury. Complete SCIs often result in permanent paralysis, while incomplete SCIs may offer some recovery.
