The Basic Science of a Stroke
The brain requires a constant supply of blood to function properly. In the brain, the blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the brain cells and also helps remove waste products. When blood flow is compromised, the brain cells in the affected area are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. This is called a stroke. A stroke is a medical condition that occurs when the blood supply of the brain is interrupted or reduced. This can prevent brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients, which can eventually lead to neuronal damage. Strokes can cause a variety of impairments physically, cognitively, and emotionally depending on the type of stroke, extent of the stroke, and location of the stroke in the brain.
