4-H is America’s largest youth development organization, empowering young people with the skills, confidence, and experiences they need to thrive.Â
In James City County, our 4-H program offers a wide range of opportunities for youth ages 5–18 to explore their interests, build leadership skills, and serve their communities—always through our “learn by doing” approach.
Our local 4-H program is delivered in many different ways to meet the needs of youth and families:
4-H Clubs – Clubs meet regularly throughout the year, giving youth a chance to dive deep into topics they care about while developing teamwork, leadership, and project skills. The Colonial Riders 4-H Horse Club builds equestrian knowledge and horse care skills while teaching discipline and responsibility. The Making Waves 4-H Teen Leaders Club offers high school youth opportunities to serve their community, plan events, and represent James City County at district, state, and national levels.
4-H Junior Camp – Our weeklong summer camp at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center combines outdoor adventure, creative classes, and team-building activities. Teens can apply to serve as 4-H Teen Counselors, gaining hands-on leadership experience, mentorship skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.
In-School Enrichment Programs – Working in partnership with local teachers, we bring 4-H lessons into the classroom that connect directly to Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Topics range from STEM and agriculture to citizenship, leadership, and healthy living.
Homeschool 4-H – Through tailored programs and activities, homeschool families can engage in hands-on learning experiences, participate in group projects, and connect with other youth in the community.
4-H Travel & Leadership Opportunities – James City County youth have the chance to attend events such as 4-H Day at the Capitol, State 4-H Congress, State 4-H Horse Show, and national programs like Ignite by 4-H, Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference, and more. These experiences connect them to a broader network of peers and mentors while expanding their leadership, communication, and civic engagement skills.
No matter the setting—club meeting, campfire circle, classroom, or conference—4-H helps youth grow into leaders who are smarter, wiser, kinder, and more capable. Everything we do reflects the 4-H motto: “To make the best better.”
